Hey all
A guy might be interested in a ca18 i have but he's interstate
i dont have a problem sending stuff interstate usually but engines are big and heavy, and this could be a problem.
Firstly how do you guys package it?
And what do you use?
Only idea i could come up with is a wooden box or crate with surrounds and roof....
And if this wooden box was an idea, where does everyone get it from? or do you make it?
Do you guys usually seperate the head to the bottom end in 2 boxes?
What padding do you guys use?
I think thats my 20questions for now
Thanks in advance all
-Choony
PS: OH BTW- mightaswel ask since i'm making this thread, anyone knwo a good company freight engine from melb -> Queensland??

well the only motor i've seen came on a pallet is was wrapped in plastice and tied down with rope.
It was also sitting on a only tyre so the sump didn't get damaged.
I don't know if this was the correct way but the motor arrived undamaged

Awesome! thanks for the help everyone! one thing, when you's all say crate, do you also mean sides and roof? so like a big wooden box sorta thing?
Fattony: So you've shipped engines this way? where did you get the crate from? is it liike the really popular pallet bottoms, from lyk coles or any supermarket kinda pallet?
Anyone know a good freight company? melb-->QLD

the best thing to ship the motor on would be a "skid", its about 1/2 the size of a normal red or blue supermarket pallet. the skid is better because its the perfect size for a motor. just place a tyre on the skid, then the motor on the tyre. get some thick industrial strength wire, and you attach it to the motor and the skid, and twist it tight with a big pair of pliers or a ring spanner etc. until the wire is really tight. do this in 3 or 4 areas from the skid to the motor. after youve tightened them all up, make sure that they're tight enough so the motor cant rock around on the skid, if the motor moves a bit then just undo one of the wires and twist and pull it tighter. the other thing you could use to restrain the motor is metal strapping, its black strapping about 2cm wide, but you need access to a little ratchet strapper. you could use rope aswell, you just need to be able to do some nice tight truckie's loop knots, and just pull them damn tight.
then get some cling wrap, industrial stuff is better, but you could use the stuff in your kitchen, and wrap it around the bottom skirt of the skip all around the motor right to the top, just to help it all stay together a bit better.
good luck.

thanks for that tip sprinter saurus, i'll use the idea of the wire and/or rope or black strap thingy
but as for the skid, i forgot my dads a wood engineer
i found a nice wooden box that was at my work which had some heavy glass bird baths in previously, i was gona use that but my dad almost slapped me wen he found out i was gona use something wooden that he didnt make
so he's gona make me one to my exact measurements.
thanks all
Choony
PS: the bird baths had a lot of this rubber stuff which i took home as padding for the engine..seems good
