22r-e performance reliablity Fri, 18 March 2005 02:42 Go to next message
I'm really interested in just how well a 22r-e can stand up to a good thrashing. Because its a rather large engine with a large stroke would this mean that its more likely to throw a rod or have something internal brake from stress?
Reason i'm asking is i'd like to use my ra65 for drifting but im really worried about the engine. I've got a rebuilt 22re thats done 30,000km so the motors nice and fresh and i really dont want to kill it prematurely. So far from just daily driving, the motor sees 5 grand on a daily basis Very Happy it hasnt shown me any problems.
What are your experiences with this motor?

mine hasn't broken after 410000kms and atleast the last 50K km it has been cained, the engine still is ultra reliable uses a bit of oil but it's performance has not changed regularly sees 4-5K and once hit 6.4Krpm never again, it still pulls strongly from down low and has plenty of power to turn the treads.

My mate had an 84 celica with 22RE engine.

It was revved out all the time.

He owned the car for 18 months, flogged it all the time - motor never broke.

He was told once it overheated and was in for a radiator rodding that he was using it with a radiator that was only running at 15% efficiency or there abouts (was clogged up something rotten!) (for 18 months!) Overheated only once and the HG was still fine, good compression - everything.

It generated a massive Crank seal oil leak and the injecters became clogged but was still tough as nails, although rough as guts.

good luck breaking a freshly rebuilt one Evil or Very Mad

Think one word "HILUX"
(22RE engine is a Hilux engine)

Another question, can a 22RE be used to drift? I would put an SC14 Supercharger on it if you want to do that sort of thing with that particular engine.

Cheers

-Adam

why its already got plenty of low down torque, just throw on some shit tyres say 175 it spins my 195 easy but to have bit more fun go less and drifto, cheap fun and even if anything happens to the motor there is plenty of them around so don't worry.

my car has only ever overheated once properly that was after the 6.4krpm incident and circle work in a paddock, currently it seems to run a bit warm could be the radiator cap though beacuse the temp is still nowhere near the red, that or the radiator is clogged like acreesa's mates. It's in for a service today to replace the diff gasket cos its leaking again second time in 9 months and will get the radiator checked out to. aparts from that the car is great.

i can only really aford one car. if worst comes to worst i can just borow one of the other cars here for my daily use.
I've already taken my ra65 to a drift practice day when it was bone stock and had moderate success. But now that i know the engine is bullet proof i'm going to start building it up properly.
i was goign to sell it and get a sprinter and build that up but the primary reason was because of engine reliablity, 4age's can take a thrashing but now i know the 22re can as well
