I am putting my 18rgeu in very soon and have read the other topics about adding fuel pumps and surge tanks but my question is, How do i go about getting/ making one??? any tips???

I will be looking for a JE Camira fuel pump as i read it is the same as a VL but cheaper Razz

I wanna get all this ready so i run into as little problems as possible when the engine gets put in...

See if you can find a cheap JE.

I found one for $150. it had been rolled, but I got the computer and sensors out of it.

If you can one for that price I'll buy the computer and loom off you and you can keep the fuel pump.

I am also after advice on this topic. Im soon doing the same conversion, but into 28, and was wondering what setup regarding surge tank and lift pump.
You place the efi pump between the surge and the injector rail right, what sort of pump would be adequate for lifting the fuel from main tank to surge? maybe mounted in boot? Is the pump from a carbied motor - like an 18R-c - usable in this situation or is a replacement the right move? Just wondering what people used , as a modest but fitting unit?

Also.. i have the fuel pump from the 18Rgeu (im not certain of its origin), and there was this other black cylindrical small swirl tank, maybe as big as a large wide coffee mug, with a few tubes hooked up top and bottom. Is this a small-scale surge pot device for the fuel system?? Thats what it looks like, but the exact same one is in place in my stock ra28 engine bay hooked up to the carby i believe or the feul regualtor.

I guess this was what was in use for the -Geu in last home. any onfo on this from anyone? just wondering whether its worth ditching for a proper surge in the back?? or still using or whatever? well i have 2 of them now.

Cheers

I bought one for $50, just ring around some wreckers, I got my one from a wrecker who kinda specialised in camiras.

[fuel tank]---lift pump----{surge tank}---efi fuel pump---MOTOR

thenk ofcourse you have the return form the motor aswell as an overflow from the surge tank.oh and efi fuel filter.

Ok just so i know i have got it.
the lift pump will be just after the fuel tank, Lifting the fuel to the surge tank in the boot... then after the surge tank the efi fuel pump will push the fuel to the efi fuel filter and to motor then a retern line from motor to the surge tank.

Cheers for your help guys.

its already been explained but if u wanna see a dodgey pic showing the path of fuel with a surge tank set up go here and scroll down to "fuel system"

http://www4.tpgi.com.au/users/loats/technical/proj ects/ra401ggeengineimplant.html

and also this is a pic drawn by bill sherwood describing what a "good" swirl pot/ surge tank should look like. but all in all it really just needs to be a tank with 4 nozzles.

I have a question along these lines too!

Do the fuel tanks in EFI cars have a breather?

Yeah that's what the charcoal cannister is for. Excess pressure is vented through the charcoal cannister, which filters the fuel vapours, then the engine purges the charcoal cannister while you're driving, cleaning out the stored vapour stuff.

Although fuel tanks still build up a fair bit of pressure on hot days 'n stuff.

The charcoal cannister is a filter on a fuel tanks "breather".

Ahh ok I see what you mean! So there is a breather but that cannister is on the breather line to stop those nasty fuel smells?
What do you mean when you say "the engine purges the charcoal cannister while you're driving, cleaning out the stored vapour stuff"? Hows this work?

Sorry to ask all these questions, but time is drawing closer for me to get a fuel tank made for my TA22.

I thought the charcoal inside the canister converts the vapour back to a liquid, like a filter.

The charcoal in the cannister absorbs the vapour, which I imagine would just be condensing inside the millions of tiny holes in the charcoal, so really it does covert it to a liquid, but only to store it. The fuel only enters & leaves the cannister as a vapour.
Because the charcoal can only absorb so much vapour before it becomes saturated, the motor has a vacuum line going to the filter which sucks in (a very little bit of) fresh air and effectively flushes or purges out the stored vapour.

So the cannister is in the engine bay?

Ok, so there is a breather line that goes from the main fuel tank to the cannister, and then vacuum line to the engine?

Yeah in the engine bay.

And mine swells up all funny, and makes angry noises after i turn the engine off, unless i go and burb the fuel tank by undoing the cap a bit Razz

WEIRD i know, is this natural or what?!

Ok, so does the Celica GT4 have one of these?
And where abouts is/should the breather be fitted to the fuel tank?
