Damn steering problems...

ok, so my damn car is driving me mad....
i'm having a bit of an issue which i just cant track down.
i have a very annoying rattle/shake in the steering when driving straight. very noticeable at around 80km/h. as soon as i put a little bit of pressure turning either way it dissapears.
Car has nolathane bushes, steering rack was rebuilt last week which is what i thought was the problem. wheel alignement was done then. balanced the wheels a while ago but it doesnt feel like its coming from there. plus i put my stockers back and it does it exactly the same thing. ball joint, tie rod ends changed not that long ago and seem ok, wheel bearings changed at the same time.
Now,
when i have my car jacked up and wiggle the wheels, i dont have any play when i wiggle it top to bottom. when i go side to side i have play, and i cant for the life of me see where it is coming from.
not sure where else to look. i took it to a steering place but the old guy there just started goin on about it being too low etc, which is not a fix to my problem. when i first got it lowered it was fine, but this is prob 4 yrs ago now,
any thoughts or recommendations for a place to take it to get it checked out would be great...
cheers

How are your tires? I had a horrible vibration in one of my cars, and it turns out it was just shit tires. Tried alignment, balancing, suspension check - everyhting passed. In the end it was just a shit set of tires that was causing it.

Any suspension place worth their salt will be able to find the problem for you.
Based on the description above I'd be looking closely at where the rack bolts to the crossmember. If the whole rack is able to move around you'll get the symptoms you describe. The fact that the rack was removed last week makes me suspect it wasn't re-installed properly.

tie rod ends worn???? i was going to say the tie rods that go into the rack but i read that you had a new rack put in.
there isnt to much more if you have side to side movement apart from worn rack, tie rod ends.
sounds like a frustrating prob for you

Consider the car may have been in an accident in its life and the body isn't 100% straight.
If this is a problem that has appeared since owning the car, I guess you can rule it out; but thought it worth mentioning.

Do you have alloy wheels? If se, are the wheel balance weights hooked on the outside of the rim vertcially, or stuck horizontally on the inside 'dish' where you can't see them?
I had a similar problem some time ago that I couldn't pin down. Turned out that I had a shitty wheel balance a the place I bought my tyres; went to another shop, got the wheels rebalanced and problem fixed. FWIW, they put the weights on the outside of the rims in the usual way, and explained that you can't get as good a balance with the weights stuck on the inside (which is what the first place had done)
