No power steering assistance on MX73 1JZ Sat, 19 March 2005 01:46 Go to next message
Just been doing some more testing on my MX73 1JZ swap, and found another little problem...
At first the power steering was noisy and had gave little power assistance, cleaned out the oil reservoir to find heaps of little pieces of metal so cleaned that out and the noise is gone, but now theres next to no power assistance at all. The pump has been pulled apart and is in good condition, doesnt seem to be any problems there, but just wondering if the pressure relief valve is stuffed?
Tested the pressure and at idle it was only at about 5psi which is about 34.45kpa I think. And at about 2500rpm its about 30psi and then only gets upto 60psi at about 4500rpm. Read in a few books and it says the pressure should be about 800-1000kpa? Confused Confused Confused
There is so little pressure that I can stick my thumb over the hose and stop whatever pressure is there Razz

err... metal in high pressure hydraulics can only mean that it (the rack or the pump) is stuffed.

high pressure hydraulic fluid at max pressure should blow a hole thru your thumb Shocked

i agree. . id say if you have checked the pump then look to the steering box/rack. when i blew a line there was a hell of alot of pressure there. alot more then 30psi

it should have blown up the 2 gauges we tried it on, one was upto 100psi and the other upto 200, and it hardly did anything Confused The pressure should be close to 800kpa, but its only at something like 40 haha
I just dont know if its the pump itself is stuffed or the pressure relief valve, because we pulled the pump apart and it looks fine. Either way if it was just the pressure relief valve, I would have to get a whole new pump wouldnt I? Sad
Weird thing was, when it had tiny bits of metal in it, it was noisy, but it had a little bit of pressure. Could this be because the metal was clogging up and allowing a bit of pressure to build up?

Ive been driving around a bit more, and power steering seems to be kicking in at just under 2000rpm. Is there anyway I can fix the pump I have now so I have power steering all the time, or is it just worth it to get a new one?
