4AGZE Auto? Sat, 19 March 2005 04:33 Go to next message
I want to put an auto on my 4agze but i need a 8 bolt flexplate/auto flywheel. My car is a ke55. Do i need a twin cam gearbox complete or can i use a flexplate off a twin cam auto and a cheaper gearbox off another 4a motor? Does anyone have any of this stuff?

I need to comlete the motor gearbox setup before i can continue on this project. I live near bris..

no offense, but why do you want to auto a 4agze. i have a manual GZE in an 86 and its heaps of fun to drive. i dont think an auto would be that fun....but still just my opinion.

is there any model toyota that came out with an auto, rear drive 4age??? cause i dont know of one. you could probably use an NA flexplate and torque convertor but then you have to find an auto box.
(does anyone know of a rear drive auto setup for 4ag???)
you might also want to think about getting a bigger stall in the convertor, up the line pressure and fit a shift kit. cause i think the torque of a gze could munch the internals of a standard box (it would go heaps better too).

then there is the problem if the box is computer controlled??? what computer would you use to sort that out.

just some ideas to think about......

The AE71 Corolla were available in Auto. 4AC engine, so no problems with bolt up. From memory, they were not computer controlled auto's. However you could adapt a TA22 Celica Auto box, as they were definately not ECU controlled. A 1G-GTE early version Auto box had an independent/stand alone ECU for the box.

Totally agree withe the comments regarding longevity of the box, without the mentioned mods. You need to have quick gear changes, otherwise the clutch plates will slip big time due to the torque of the 4AGZE.

cheers Chuck.

71's had a traumatic. The only issue with getting it to fit is that the flex plate has got six bolt holes (4AC), not eight. Strength? Any trans shop can work over a traumatic for you. As for making it work though, might take a bit of fiddling - traumatics tend to chuck a sook when connected to an engine with different vacuum characteristics to what they were 'intended' for.

Do all 4age's have 8 bolts to hold on the flexplate/flywheel? If so i am thinking i should try and get hold of a flexplate from an auto ae86 fwd or something and use it on a rwd gear box. I'm not sure if that will work... so the non computerised boxes use vacume as a kick down device?

The reason i want to go auto is because there is less hassle setting up and the car will primalary be used for street legal drags. Auto seems easier and faster. also less likely to have tramp issues and other things with an auto without a stall. Might even be my every day driver like that too. Be nice to get rid of my exa turbo... it's fun but too much attention from the cops

ALMOST all 4AG's have 8 bolts, and all GZE's do. There aren't any FWD AE86's... You probably have two choices - make up a flex plate to suit, or MAYBE you'd be able to redrill one from an auto 4AG (go to a wrecker and see if they'll give you one - a lot of 20v 4AG's come with autos attached) - not sure if it'll fit, but it might...

Not all 'non computerised' autos use vacuum, some use a cable on the throttle as a load input, and many Toyota electric shift boxes still used a cable for pressure control.

The auto idea isn't potentially quite as bad as a lot of people will probably insist that it is, but you will need to fiddle with the innards of the traumatic a bit, standard AE71 will need more grip, more pressure, altered shift points (maybe manualised?) and preferably a bit higher stall.

Thanks mrshin, Sorry i meant the twincam fwd that comes after the ae82 i had an 82 with a 4a motor and it had the 6 bolt. I will probbly go the 71 traumatic as u say and get it strengthened. I am trying to keep this project as simple as possible. (even tho that means i loose a bit in reliability) anything that dies on me while driving racing etc will be replaced with stronger items when the time comes. For now I'm not after a race car just a really quick street car. The stall converter i will leave orig for now and if i go full drag setup then the box and all will get a harcore going over then. I have tried to source an auto from a levin(they came out with one too) or a AE86 but auto levins don't seem to get imported much. either way i cant find one.

So that just leaves me chasing a flexplate. I'd recon the fwd ons would fit.. I'll try and sourse one through the week unless any of u guys have one in bris i can buy.

Thanks for all your help guys.
