I think maybe you clutch is on it's way out mate. Usally If you can get reverse without any sign of clash it's a sign the clutch is operating correctly,. But by the sounds of it the clutch may be gone.
Hope what ever it is it doesn't cost you too much

let me see.
you engage second gear (or 4th) let out clutch, and then you have no forward motion...
must be gearbox mounts
and you wondered what that nasty sound was? the engine and gearbox rotating in the engine bay perhaps??
sound slike broken cables (but you checked that), broken selector shaft, broken shift fork etc etc..
if the other gears work fine, the clutch is likely ok.
is odd that 2nd and 4th are gone, and not 1/2, or 3/4... maybe it's not shift forks...
it does sound like the shifter mechanism is the culprit.
time to get out the manual for your car and have a look

hey, thanks for the info!!!
i took the car for a quick hot lap around the block, to my suprise all gears were there again, but after a while disappered. i stopped the car and took off quick, throwing it into 2nd........ to my suprise again 2nd was there. it seems if i drive the car normal i have no 2nd nor 4th but if i give it a fang all gears are normal (but they do seem out of place).

uh oh?
| Crunching reverse is quite common...
Many cars are built with no synchro on reverse...
And even the ones with synchro, still crunch...
Its the fact that the counter shaft and the gear just don't perfectly line up and are spinning in opposite directions if you go to engage reverse quickly...
Reverse crunch, and even first gear engagement are quite common, ESPECIALLY on older cars

like everyone says sounds very much like in the cable. the 2 cable is held by a U clip onto a brackets, one of clip of the cable has fallen off or is not clipped on tight/properly. check that first

Actually you will find my advice is also right as I learnt it from AUTOMOTIVE WORKSHOP BOOKS. One for my WB Holden and the other for my Camry as for the 91 Corolla having a common "Crunch in reverse" I doubt it as my Camry's from the same ere hell even my old ute never crunched when put in reverse. I some how would doubt Toyota would make a better gear box for the Camry and give the Corolla a shitty one. Yes it is common for cars too "crunch" gears. But I was only trying too give some help. and I hate too say it that having a faulty clutch can also cause difficulty gear changing.

Just some Clutch realted problems and yes having a faulty clutch CAN cause difficutly changing gears .
There can be many reasons for why something fucks up in a car
I will post MORE up when I find more about clutches

I still stand by my method of checking a clutch for correct operation. Nearly 2 years ago the fluid in my hydraulic system was just like mud?? (Previous owner) and I had trouble selcting gears and had even MORE trouble getting reverse, (But reverse worked fine.) I'm not saying you won't get reverse. but it's harder too put it in reverse.
