Master brake cylinder question Mon, 21 March 2005 08:08 Go to next message
Ey there fellow toymodders,

I'm currently in the middle of a brake upgrade. Moving from my stock KE70 180-200MM front discs to RA28 260-280MM discs (sorry not sure of exact sizes). I've been told this will be too much for my feeble master brake cylinder and that the pedal will hit the floor before my brakes do much at all...

Just wondering if anyone knows much about brake cylinders and would mine be capable of using much bigger brakes?

Thanks,
Kev.

The requirement for a larger bore master cylinder is a function of the larger caliper piston size, not disc size. I'm unaware of how much bigger an RA28 caliper piston is (I would not have thought it to be too big a change from the KE70 one), but I doubt that it would cause the pedal to go all the way to the floor. At worst, with the RA28 calipers you will notice a moderate increase in pedal travel. I have larger Magna calipers (still single spot sliding) on my AE71, and the pedal travel has increased, but nowhere near what you'd consider unsafe.

Cheers
Phil

According to the PBR website KE70 and RA28 both use 20.64mm bore master cylinders so there should not be too much of a problem using the standard master cyl.

I am no expert on brakes though so if anyone can correct me please do.

There you go, sounds like all will be fine Smile I had thought that the RA28 bore was bigger, but the PBR info confirms that this is not the case! Perhaps I was just thinking of the fact that they are 4 bolt not 2 bolt flange Confused

I at least know that RA60 brakes work alright with Corolla masters, although they pedal is naturally too soft for my liking anyway!
