hey guys, i had a search and couldnt find much definate answers.
the blacktop 20v redlines at something like 9000rpm right?
is it true that on stock computer they are rev limted at teh high 7000rpm range?
if a engine can redline so high, why did toyota set the rev limter so low?? is it common to cut the rev limiter and rev out to 9000rpm for more power? is this going to cause terrible engine damgage? is this effective? how much is an aftermarket computer for a 20v?
any explanations would be much appreciated.
thanks

the 20v redline is 8000, not 9000, and the rev cutout is at 8200.

yeah I wouldnt mind knowing what these engines can take. Less for the backtop I assume because of the thinner rods. Are the rods the weakness?

I seriously doubt that, I have had 2 friends both rev their stock standard 4ages (88kw) to 9000 one held it there. I just havent heard of a crank let go before in a 4ag engine of any sort.

the lighter rods allow a higher redline. less inertia. you will find alot of the most hardcore japanese NA '86s run an ae111 bottom end, crank and rods.. often block, somtimes pistons, with a big port 16v head.. the use of the 16v head i would say has alot to do with tradition.
as far as factory redline/rev limit, the black top is the highest at 8200.
and the crank can fail, but its usually due to oil starvation.
