Bought a RWD 4a-g, going into an AE86, some questions... Wed, 23 March 2005 05:37 Go to next message
howdy all just some quick ones, I have searched but couldn't decypher exactly what the go is...

presumably this rwd 4a-g ive bought comes with a flywheel, not sure about clutch...
I presume I can use the std flywheel no worries what about the clutch? someone said its the same as a 4a-c? true?
Can I use a later model clutch or not? is it needed for a std motor?

Also i'm not sure if ill go the stock computer route or buy an aftermarket one straight away...
if I buy the std comp what sensors are needed appart from the ones on the long block? Just the MAP sensor? can i use one off an AE92 twin cam car? what other map sensors are the same?
Is the factory ECU any good?

Cheers, Nathan.

You can use the 4age flywheel, the bigport and smallport had different size flywheels though. I found with my bigport the 4ac clutch fitted fine. But the smallport is slightly larger and would need the clutch suited for that.

There is the map sensor, air temp, coolant temp, cold start thermo switch thing, those are the important ones for the factory ecu.

Make sure you get ignitor etc also.

Factory ECU is fine if the engine is also factory.

Cheers
Joel

Ok, where is this situated? is it integral to the dissy? or external?
Anyone have a picture?

Not sure what exactly is comming with the long block, but i'm sure I could find a wreck up here to scavange parts off.

So thats bring me back again to the map sensor, is it car specific? or is it just a generic 1bar toyota sensor?
what about the EFI 4a-fe, do they have any parts in common with the 4a-ge EFI? ie, the said ignitor and what not?

The map sensors are different for different models. The plugs on the loom are not the same so you can't hook them in. I know this is a fact for 86kw blutop and 100kw redtop. I don't know if cutting the plugs and soldering them on would work.

Ok cool...

I will be making a custom wiring loom anyway...

It would be really handy if the map sensor from the 4a-fe engine had the same output as the AE86 map sensor... no one knows?
surely they are just 'normal' 0-5v 1bar map sensors?

as far as i know, any 5 volt MAP sensor should work, all they do is go from "vacuum" to atmospheric pressure.

dont need air temp, dont need thermo switch because you dont nee the cold start injector.

to run at least, not sure how much worse it will run without these bits

ok, another question here..
regarding clutches...

The RWD engine can use a 4a-c clutch..

So i'm wanting to buy a beefier clutch to put on the engine while it is out.. What do I order the clutch for? a 4a-c? or a early 4a-g? or a later 4a-g?
what the differences?
