My RA60 had none of those things and still worked perfectly. I would say just rip them out.

That's an ignition/alternator noise suppressor. If you ever want to use your radio, leave it there. An aftermarket stereo is just as susceptible to noise in the electrical system as the factory stereo.

sweet, thanks for that norbie. who would have thought that would require 11 replies?
last question - I assume it's an earthed connection, and not just mounted to the body via exposed metal for the aesthetic appeal? I plan to mount it out of sight, and figure I'll probably have to sand off some paint to do that.

Yes, the metal tab needs to be mounted to earth.

Weird, must be something different between the RA60, because mine had none of the supressors and it was fine.

They are capacitors, and they are used as filters. (a capacitor to ground at frequency acts as a short circuit, they won't remove DC tho, so thats all apples)
If you think about it, say you have a 6cyl, and your at 3000rpm, thats 9000 ignition cycles per min, or 150Hz...the filters try and get rid of the nice tone your engine is creating (human hearing is around 20Hz -> 20KHz btw)
(oh yeah my maths is prbly shagged, but you get the idea...)
I'd be leaving them
Cheers

or if your putting a serious after market stereo rip em out and put a 1 farad capacitor in there. as you'll need it if you decide to have some serious stereo gear in there. that way you wont have them floating around the engine bay

Or not. Those giant 1 farad capacitors are for a completely different purpose.

ive always used them to filter out engine noise and they have worked just fine.
i know they are also to ensure constant voltage to amps that are drawing large peak current but they also do a perfectly fine job of filtering enigne noise.
