I own a 1997 Bathurst.
They were actually sold here 1994 to 1999. All are naturally aspirated, manual and have targa tops.
Motor is a 3rd generation 3S-GE. Factory specifies 129kw at the engine. A stock one put down 105rwkw at the last dyno day. Nice torque curve too. The power is good, but obviously the import turbo models have more if that's your thing.
The brakes are big, and IMHO have excellent feel.
I'm a fan of the manual steering too.
Air conditioning was optional and I wouldn't consider one without it. The small cabin, sloping windscreen and extra glass area added by the targa roof combine to make the interior heat up quickly under the sun.
Happy to answer any other questions.

Alex has a mighty fine example of a SW20 Bathurst, it's top nick and well worth a look at next outing.
I can only give opinions on the N/A SW20's, they are pretty fast off the line, but being only a 2.0L N/A they lack the straight out speed that larger engines obviously have.
But........throw in some twisties and any SW20 will loose them, they handle like a dream. A very fun car to own, only downside is the 2 seats thing, but that's good sometimes if you dont want to give certain people lifts home.
I don't consider A/C as essential if it's hot enough to use the A/C, take the roof off (but wear a hat!), the non power steering gives a much "truer" response to what the car is actually doing on the road, and because the engine is in the back there isn't a lot of weight at the front to fight with anyway.
Get one!
Oh one more thing, I've been in Senor2's Gen 3 3S-GTE, the thing was an absolute rocketship, I was glued back to my seat for the whole acceleration until we ran outa road, it made 151RWKW, a beast!

Engine number is stamped on the gear box side of the block (bit of a bitch to see).
As for problems, nothing really different to look for compared to any other used car, although I might be forgetting something....
Thanks for the kind words Alchemist we should organise some sort of MR2 meet or something sometime soon, would be good to see a whole bunch of 2's (AW11s as well!) in the same place!

I've got an Aussie Delivered N/A.
It's got Gen 2 3SGE goodness putting out 94RWKW with some mild mods(4-2-1 extractors, HKS filter(in box), high flow cat). Engine really kicks in about 2000RPM and goes hard & smooth all the way to 7000RPM(could go further, but I'm not too keen to push it).
It's got A/C and no P/S, but honestly you don't need power steering.
The JDM N/A I looked at buying at folding mirrors(so when you turned off car mirrors folded in), directional foglights that moved based on steering wheel position(really kool), leather interior(I'm guessing that's an option), the particular one I looked at seemed to have less poke than the one I bought, but I guess it was stock. That's was one of the main reasons I didn't buy it, the busted wheel bearings, leaking gearbbox and high Km's were a few others....
Yes the 3SGE is from the SX Celica's, but I'm pretty sure they only had Gen1 3SGE's which had TVIS.

Yup....Gen 1's had TVIS, anything after that doesn't have TVIS, no SW20 I've seen has had TVIS.

um dude my 92 gen 2 3sge has tvis and yours does too.
it is good.
at full open position having it obstructing the opening to an extent does reduce outright power but it's torque advantage at low and mid range revs makes it worth having.

Not quite. Australian delivered cars from 1994-1999 came as either Bathurst or GT. Air conditioning was optional on both. Power steering was standard for the GT and unavailable for the Bathurst.
Les wrote on Mon, 04 April 2005 20:49 | did the aussie delivered non bathurst models come with ac and p/s

I think both AC and PS were optional on the pre-1994 Australian delivered cars. These were just called MR2.
Les wrote on Mon, 04 April 2005 20:49 | all the non tubos were 2.0 3sge's right ?

All Australian SW20s got the 3S-GE. Gen II in the pre-1994 MR2 and Gen III in the 1994 onwards Bathurst/GT.
I think the JDM cars got the BEAMS 3S-GE in the final year or two of production. And of course the 3S-GTE was available in Japan.
The American market was different again. They got the 3S-GTE, but the NA cars got the 2.2L 5S-FE.
Les wrote on Mon, 04 April 2005 20:49 | were these the same as the sx celica's motor ?

Nope. In Australia, the SW20 MR2 never shared an engine with the Celica. The ST162 Celica got the Gen I 3S-GE, but later models switched to the 5S-FE and then the 2ZZ-GE.

I don't know enough about the JDM cars to answer this fully. I do know they have folding mirrors, an automatic transmission was available and the targa tops were optional.
I have the sales brochure for the 1997 Australian models, so I can easily look up anything more you'd like to know about their standard equipment or options.
