Looks great. So that's why you've been so quiet lately eh?

I'm in the process of buying a house which has a lot of shed/garage space, and if that goes through I'll be embarking on a similar project. Nothing quite so attention-grabbing as bright red mind you, I think I'll stick with plain white.

Sorry to hijak but that spray job is just brilliant!! cheers

if i painted the engine yellow, why would i want to paint the car yellow???

only 80 year old ladies think that the one colour looks good from head to toe

solid colour paint- protec acrylic
thinners for colour- multipurpose no name
ratio of thinners : colour- 60:40
coats of plain colour- about 5, more on the roof and bonnet

halfway through the last spray pot of colour, i topped up with clear. half empied that pot, topped up with clear again, and once more half empited and filled. basic serial diution of the colour with clear.

then i did about 6-8 coats of plain clear on top of this - thick enough to rub back into.

clear- protec acrylic
thinners- protec premium thinners
ration thinners : clear- 60:40

rubbed back the colour+clear with 600 before applying the coats of clear. and due to a mistake, ALSO rubbed back the clear with 1000 before clearing again with 2 more coats.

rubbed back with 1200, then 2000 wet+dry

machine compunding with the farclea GIII, the hand polish

if i did it again, i would rub back more often between coaots with 600-800

dont forget - MUST use big compressor WITH a water separator!!

cheers
ed

brings back memorys of mine

now you just gotta not scratch it or dent it

how much did this end up costing you?? materials, etc.?

flares are yet to be finished, but will definitely be going back on

looks too skinny without them. cant wait till the 235/17s sit in there too...

"helps when you know a spray painter" ??? huh?? this was a 100% dodgy backyard never-done-it-before paint job. but i did get it compounded and polished by a guy who knows what he was doing.

as for price?

um, about $400 in paint, clear and thinners
about $100 in paper, compounds, and polish
$100 in labour for the guy to compound and polish the thing

i also got a instant windscreens to remove the front and reer glass, then come back later and fit a spankers new windscreen and fit the old rear glass, so add another $400

whats that... about $1k

yeah, about right

and no, im never doing it again.

one car painted. been there, done that, never doing it again

my bad,

thought it was a professional spray painting place until i read it proply

i also think i that i have proved my point that i can paint a car....so i would proply never do it again...for what its worth, you get a car that looks great but you will be to worried about other people carelessly scratching or denting your car....or even your self mistakingly denting it.

my next car will be; no show, all go

Yeah, I'm itching to paint my car, but I just got reversed into again a week ago. Noticed it when I was washing the car so I have no idea when and where it happened.

That's six times now in, how many years have I owned it? 8 maybe?

It's just another dented panel now. I can't imagine how heartbroken I'd be if I'd just had the car resprayed.

Oh, and out of those 6, guess how many people left their details?
Yup, none.

i used por15 in the prep of the tailgate (took a bath in it basically!), boot lining, and sills. i didnt need to use it anywhere else. the por15 then got primer'd over, and incorporated into the general prep work for the rest of the car...

por15 rocks, i use it wherever i possibly can

rb26

needs the inlet re-oriented downwards due to the L->R side swappage, but meh, thats easy enough.

or i might try and convince myself to run a panel filter against a vent in the bonnet, and keep the plenum poineted upwards like that. who knows yet

If there is room, downwards and CAI through inner guard or out thru the radiator support panel. Is the battery on the passenger's side?

but there is still the fuse box, break out box, radiator overflow and washer tank to contend with in that corner. yet to be figured out... minor details at this point

i spose it all depends on the main colour of the car.. i think bumpers and other accessories look good with that red colour, but mine is white, and white and black look good together... if all the accessories where white it looks a bit stupid

im a big fan of contrasting colours to break up monotonous blocks of plain colour... so i did the bumpers black. a lot of the yanks seem to like colour coding both the front and back bumpers, and IMHO it looks pretty crap... just my 2c though

fog lights are to be refitted (though theyll be rather modified by the time they go back in)

why? because they do SFA for casting light, and i do a lot of backroad country night driving, and dont want to fit a set of stand alone hellas

how? am grafting in some of those 200mm deep, narrow convex lens HID type high beam units into the rear body of the light. lifted them out of a statesman or something. theyre the same unit as the high beam lens from a jza80 supra. throw an amazing pencil beam

Seems like a pretty aggressive profile. That's a lot of lift but interestingly, you have less duration than mine @ 50 thou (mine are 304*, 262* @ 50 thou, 11mm lift). You're trying to cram 11.75mm lift into less time than my total lift!! I fear for your valve seats. Where did you get the profile from? PM if you don't want it as public knowledge.

I have all my gear so I won't be doing it but have you investigated boring out the lifter bores and using some 3SGE BEAMS dual VVTi buckets? They are bigger (33mm? - Glenn will know) and will allow a nastier cam without the nasty acceleration and pounding. Nissan FJ20s have a 34mm bucket from memory. I suppose the limiting factor will be the bearing surface in the head for the cams might get a little narrow.
