Celica St162 Sx - Questions and hopefully some answers Sun, 27 March 2005 16:46 Go to next message
Hello, just came across my path to get a St162 Sx Celica late 1985 model. As i don't know anything about the car i wondered if a few of you gals and guys could answer the vast array of questions i have. well here goes.

obviously its Fwd, does it have a lsd etc?
2l engine, how well do they preform / how much fuel ?
whats genially goes wrong with these cars?
as far as stereo's go, what size speaker mounts does it have front/rear?
any power steering?
are the breaks disks all round or drum rear?
are the parts easy to come across (I'm in Perth)?
I'm sure i had more questions but I'm sure ill think of a few more tomorrow, i would like to know any good / bad points about these cars and if there worth getting (driving a 86 laser atm)
thx in advance - Christian

My brother has an '87 SX.

As you say, they are FWD. No LSD, unfortunately. They have power steering and four wheel discs.

The motor is a 1st generation 3S-GE. Factory quotes a peak 103kw at the engine. Consumption is about 9-10L/100km city conditions. It's a strong engine and with regular servicing will easily do over 200,000km.

Common problem is the manual gearbox. Make sure to shift up and down through all gears when test driving.

Parts are easy to source. Genuine parts from Toyota are expensive (compared to the '87 Twin Cam Corolla I used to own).

Much nicer car than a Laser.

very true, mines done 320,000 with just regularish servicing*, should be good for 400,000 easily without a rebuild / replacement

*( i can't account for the first 17 years of its life)

1. no lsd
2. performs okay but is restricted and responds to mods well. Minor changes such as better oil, spark plugs, even fuel make a difference fuel is ok, about 10l per 100k as said, but if driven carefully can be as high as 12-15L.
3. Leaky power steering pumps, engine mounts, dizzy oil seal, thats about it. The big end bearing cant take much abuse if you rev it deep in the red.
4.front like a 3.75inch speaker lol, but 4inch can fit wioth a hacksaw, theyre also in a speakerbox, with a resonating speaker thing, hard to explian, rears are 4 inches in same type of set up.
5.yes
6.brakes all around
7.in SA they are

good points;
out perform nissan 2 litres (sr20) if driven right
looks Very Happy
can accomodate pretty large AND wide wheels (i have 17x7.5 inches)
great run about

bad points;
gear stick is too high, espescialy if the boot has fallen down
rev meter is set too high, tempting to rev it out past 7200 will definitely lead to spun bearings

well i hope this helped ya and good luck with the car, and the laser will get eaten if it had a ten minute head start!
