RT142 22RE - timing chain help

Howdy guys
I have a 22RE powered Corona and I'm doing the timing chain. I'm too cheap to buy a service manual, so I just need to know - does the head have to come off or not? I've done some prying and I can't get the front timing case to budge.
Next step is to pull the sump off entirely and then if that doesn't work the head comes off too - but I'm trying to avoid that as it turns a simple job into a hard one.
The second thing is - which timing chain kit is it? I went to Repco and they allegedly sell three. I've narrowed it down to two as one is a double row item. There are two single-row chain kits, one is longer than the other. So which is it?

For the benefit of anyone who finds this thread via a search, the following site has an excellent run-down on the process for a 22R:
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/timingch ain/
Note that there may be some differences as this is a slightly different version of the motor, but it's still a good start.
Still can't find an answer as to which timing chain do I need?

check inside head for bolts (usually 1 or 2) holding head to timing cover.
on an 18R is is reputed that you can change the timing cover with head still attached. you also have to loosen the sump bolts as the timing cover must come off straight.
if there is a stud in the timing cover which the head comes down onto, then you're stuffed.
22RE is somewhat similar (except for the allow crossflow head) so this trick might be possible - downside is introducing weakness to the head gasket, potential for warping of the head and the high risk of the sump gasket never quite sealing again.
my haynes manual (for 71 to 85 RWD celica) suggests an 22RE is similar to a 22R which uses a single-row chain. it does not indicate total length, only that maximum stretch in the chain is indicated by when that length of links is 147mm.
head out to wacol ABC wreckers and pull the cover on a wrecked 22RR in the engine bin or out in the yard?
Also, try Budget auto parts at oxley - they seem to have their shit together when it comes to identifying/locating parts - i've never had to swap a wrong part from them yet.

I'm fairly sure that if it's an Aus delivered 22RE, it has to be the later version. We never got the tall block on anything other than 21Rs. In fact, if it's a 'rona 22RE ('86+ ????) then it has the TCCS EFI rather than analog, which makes it even more similar to the '85+ 22REs in the rest of the world ( we got a weird version in '85 as we were still on leaded petrol - the shortblock engine liek everyone else, but with the older efi that other countries got on their 22REs in '83/'84)
As regards changing the timing chain - the 'proper' way is to remove the head; the bodgy way is leave the head on and drop the sump. When I did this years ago, I did it the body way.
I suggest joining & making a post on the Old Celica email List @ www.celicas.org - they're the 2xR experts
