electric system problem

hey
the electrical system in my car is pretty shoddy. When my headlights are on, and i pull down a window (electric windows) my headlights dip slightly. When my headlights are turned on, my interior display clock dims. and various other little things
At first i thought it was an earthing problem, but after getting a jumper lead and puttin one end on my battery, and one end onto the chassis, it made no difference..
The battery is about 5 months old, but i've always had the problem, even when my battery was new, so that leaves my alternator.
Is it very difficult to change one? i know my dad does it by himself, so it cannot be too difficult i imagine.
How much would a new one cost, and is it possible to fit a "bigger" one with more output... i have 2 alternators in the shed from our old corona i believe,78 model . Dad says they are both in good workin condition
Can i simply get that and put it in my car? the engine is a 4S-FE and the car is an ST190 corona 92 model.
Any other suggestions ?
cheers

How does it go starting? Sluggish or what?
Is it only with your power windows that it dims or do other devices cause your headlights to dim also?
If it was the alternator your battery should have gone flat a few times. A power window motor shouldn't draw enough power to make the headlights dim anyway.
Check the grouding of the power window motors and computer (probably inside the door).
Check your battery terminals are nice and clean.
If you want to check your alternator is working, get a multimeter and check the voltage with the engine running, should be around 13.8 volts ideally. Best to do this with your headlights or even high beam and a few other things running like interior fan.

Startup is perfect, no problems at all.
Battery has only ever gone flat once, and then i got a new one...turned out my old one was ok though... but never happeend agian
battery terminals are totally clean, power windows are the only thing..can't really think of anything else that would draw power?
my head unit dims when i turn my volume up to a certain level as well. and no, not when it's EXTREMELY high either. this is at a level where music is still clear and louder than average listening level but not HEAPS loud.
do i check the voltage at the battery?

Yep. Check it at the battery.
Narrow it down after that. ie. if it's just one of the windows which causes the dimming effect, or all of them (they may all utilise a single grounding point).
Really, so long as your battery is charged, you should be able to run headlights and use your power windows at the same time without dimming anyhow (with the ignition off). Unlikely it's the alternator but doesn't hurt to check if you have a multimeter handy!

Mate I'd personally say there's no problem to worry about.
Today I was in a car with power windows and tried it just out of interest and the same effect was apparent (this was basically a new car). The interior light dimmed a bit when the motor first started, so did the interior clock ilumination. Headlights I didn't try.
