Anyone know where the 1g engine diagnostic light normally joins to on the ECU? I want to run a test to make sure everything is fine.I have a feeling the temp signal is not gettign back to the ECU but I have no test light. Also where do those two pins go to on the ECU because i'm not sure if I have those either. It's a gen 3 1g-gte in an RA28.

Gen2 or 3? Basically, check the wiring diagram for your ECU for the "check engine light" pin, give 12V to one side of your light and the earth it via that pin on ECU.

the warning light itself is typically on the "BODY" plug of the ECU with the label W.
Connect this to one side of a low power 12V globe or LED, and the other side of the globe to ignition.
Do you have the diagnostic port wired up in your car?

Alternatively, bridge your diagnostic plug terminals with a light bulb, instead of just a paper clip. The bulb will flash the codes!
cheers Chuck.

does it need to be connected before the key is on? And does the engine need to be running?
I connected it up between the ECU power pin and the diagnostic pin and it just stays on, no blinking at all. Does this mean anything?
Also what's likely to happen if you have multiple codes, does it just do them in sequence or does it just show one?

It's just easier to do it before turning the key... that way you wont miss the codes! (yes, i've tried it)

See if the engine is still there
It should flash constantly if everything is ok, and flash certain amounts to represent numbers, which will be the error codes. If it's always on, you either haven't done it right or there is something fucked with the ECU afaik.

Checked, engine is in place
I'm pretty sure I have the right wire, yellow with a red stripe and on the same plug as the main ECU power ect. Engine runs pretty good, no problems with it but it seems to run a little rich, just wanted to check the ECU is getting things like water temp signal properly. Might just go through all the sensors with a multimeter and check there connection with the ECU.
