Difference between RA60 and RA23's? Tue, 29 March 2005 09:50 Go to next message

Which one is the best?[ 26 vote(s) ]
1.RA60 6 / 23%
2.RA23 20 / 77%

Hey, I'm new to the toyota celica scene. I've seen some pics of both the RA60's and RA23's i was just wondering wat the differece between them is. Also how much a decent one will cost? I'm looking a project car and i rekon one of these would be good base. Thanks in advance.

RA60 is ugly from the front, and edgier all around. RA23 is much swoopier and a better looker. Both have T-series diffs. The RA60 has rack-and-pinion steering and would arguably perform better for it. RA60 also has bigger brakes. That said, it's also slightly heavier.

RA60 is much more modern, has a nicer interior and generally everything is a bit newer. The RA23 is older, so you have to expect that.

I'd say it'd be easier, tailgate aside, to find a better condition RA60. RA23's are getting a bit thin on the ground.

Basically, it will come down to what you want from it.

To be honest, the sort of chick that will screw you for your car isn't the sort of chick I would want...and the RA60 has more room in the interior.

I meant from the car. And if you're my size, the extra room the RA60(very very very similar to the MA61 which i have) means two tenths of bugger all unless you're into yoga and a contortionist Wink

Hi,

The RA60 is butt-ugly from any direction. The RA23 is much more pleasing to the eyes. However, as previously mentioned, you'd probably have a better chance of getting a good condition RA60 than an RA23 'cos the RA23 is a few years older.

Also, any chick who wants to screw you just 'cos of your car isn't the type of chick I'd like to go out with. I doubt there'd be any chick in the entire planet, no matter how desperate, would screw you for your car and your car happens to be an RA60!

An RA23 I can understand (though barely)... but not an RA60. Smile

look at at the bottom of this post and click the link to see my RA65 .. its a RA65 with a 22RE engine that will suffice compared to the 21RC in a RA60 untill you have the 5k to do a big conversion

not to mention the sex popup lights and they are usually kept in better condition than ra60's

here is the link

I think the performance out of my 21R isnt bad, but to take the ra60 seriously, it needs an engine conversion Razz

i think money wise - to get either RA60 or RA23 to look like either of those photos

it would be CHEAPER to get the RA60 in that condition rather than the RA23

I'm not talking about buying a car in the condition those 2 cars are. I would prefer not to have any rust and is regoable. So how much for a RA23? without rust and is clean, but needs abit of work? Like a couple of k? or $5,000+? Thanks

price of an ra23:

I bought a straight one with VERY minimal rust:

ie: rust spots on roof less than 10c coin size, little bit of rust on rear window (around the sills), and a little bit in tip of bonnet.

with an 18rg and sound system for just under $3000.00

That said --> I've spent nearly 6k (including purchase price) on it so far - and it's no where near what I want (see the avatar - that's the dream)

RA23s look sexier.

But the RA60 has a better stance. Dumped over a large set of rims, the RA60 has more presence.

Nah, it was on the car when I bought it.

I did the "aerodynamic modification" though... ie: I angled it... hehe

I eventually pulled it off and left the stump with the view that I'd remove it totally and cover up the hole.
Haven't quite gotten around that that part yet though.

Hi,

The RA23 is a coupe and the RA60 is a liftback.

I'm not sure what the coupe model of the RA60 is, but it's a most unattractive looking vehicle.

As far as liftbacks go, the RA60 is very ordinary compared to the RA28. I can't help myself, I'm just an old school lad who thinks the early gens piss all over the later stuff for looks.

The RA25 looks better again! But, I'm a biased old fart Smile

As far as the MA61 Supra.... it was the best looking Supra ever made. The later models just don't do it for me. Again, my personal opinion.

I'm not a huge fan of the xA60x toyotas. They can look alright if done properly, but I still don't like the overall shape.

RA23's on the other hand have heaps of style. Nothing beats that old school shape.

Above everything, the RA60 COUPE is one of the ugliest cars I've seen. Its right up there with Exa's

I'd be budgeting 4-5k for an RA23 in a very nice condition.

The RA60 has the layback lights, live rear and 2.0L carby engine.
The RA65 has the real popup lights, IRS, and a 2.4L EFI engine.

The rear lights are different too. The RA60 has the reverse lights up the top and I think the RA65 has them on the bottom.

SA63 looks the same as the RA65, except I think the exhaust still points down instead of being straight like the RA65? Not 100% sure on that though.
Not sure about the rear lights either.

RA60(late '81 to mid '83) - 2.0L 21R-C, T series 6.7" live axle, w57 gbox, early style tail lights, pop out headlights, sideways open doorhandles.

SA63(mid '83 to mid '84) - 2.0L 2S-C, T series 6.7" IRS, w55 gbox, late style taillights, pop up headlights, upways open doorhandles.

RA65(mid '84 to mid '85) - 2.4L 22R-E, F series 7.5" IRS, w55 or w58 gbox, late style taillights, pop up headlights, upways open door handles, check engine light on dash.

SA63 and RA65 are very similar, sharing similar interior trims that differ from the RA60 styles.

As far as liftbacks go, the RA60 is very ordinary compared to the RA28. I can't help myself, I'm just an old school lad who thinks the early gens piss all over the later stuff for looks.

Absolutely and Entirely agree.

Mate if ur looking at an ra23, i would also take a look at the hatchback version(ra28). I prefer the ra28. But it doesnt bother me becaue i have 2 TA23(same as RA23 but with T series motor) and 1 RA28.

I was lucky enough to pick up the Yellow TA23 in this link>>> for $550(no rust). http://forums.toymods.org.au/index.php?t=msg&t h=55497&start=0&rid=6957&S=768df4abea4 d6b8feea7cc4daa001b70
Which i beleive is a bargain!! i think u would be lucky to find one like this for that price.

Regards, Jeff

There is an absolutely mint condition RA65 up on the sunshine coast man, $2500.. havent had a full close look, but the paint work is good, panels are straight, tint, nice lil wheels, 2.4l motor bla bla bla, if you want me to sus it, pm me as it sits down the road from me.. I'd get it if i didnt have my RA60, too poor to get it as a spare too! But my previous car was an RA65 and it hammered, handled alright n drifted good..

peace wes
