4age guzzling oil

went to check the oil on my 4age powered ae86 yesterday...
and the level was about half-way up the letter L. as in, L for too LOW.
*sob*
it's only about 3-4 weeks since i got it serviced/oil changed, and it's all of a sudden got next to no oil...
so i've been keeping a close eye on the level since then, but i'm wanting to know what can be done about this, how i can work out what's causing it...
i know the engine's not losing oil out the bottom or anything scary like that, but i'm told it could mean that my piston rings are shagged? will it take a total tear down/rebuild to replace them? is there a short term fix that i can use until i get my engine transplant sorted out? or do i just need to keep adding more oil and hope for the best?
cheers guys.

First just top it up, and keep an eye on it. Bit of luck maybe the idiots at the shop didn't fill it up correctly.
Secondly if its using that much oil you should notice smoke out the back.
Try dropping it back to de-accelerate through the gears, then dump it. If heaps of smoke suspect rings.
If not bad then leave it idling for a few minutes then rev it, if smoke then could just be stem seals.
Also a compression leak down test could better diagnose this.
If you have problems, then maybe heavier grade oil could help reduce the usage for a while.

Most high reving twin cam motors do burn some oil when at high RPM.
Have you been flogging it lately?

i've been flogging the guts out of it.
does this mean i should pretty much expect to be burning oil? doesn't sound right really...

did some 'diagnostics this arvo' (taking off quickly after idling a bit, and doing 20 in 4th gear up-hill)
no smoke.
so, with a bit of luck, the idiot at the shop just didn't fill it up with oil properly.
i'll keep checking regularly though.

If you flog the knackers out of it, you generally can expect to use a bit of oil. The other thing is, if you like to try and flog it round corners, and don't have a later 4ag with the extra oil drain from the cams back to the sump, they have a habbit of building up oil in the cam covers and dumping it through the PCV into the intake - I got told off at calder last weekend for apparently making an 'unsightly' cloud of smoke every time I went for a right hander.

right...
i was kind of seeing an oil catch can and an oil cooler in my future anyway, soooo...
yeah!
I'm not so worried now anyway... as long as i keep an eye on the oil levels, catastrophic engine failure should be a while off yet. and if not, i'll flog the corpse of the 4age and use bits of it to sling an ae92 4age in there.

the 4age's are notorious for burning oil. Both my ae82 and my ae92 4ag's burnt a heap of oil, I was topping up every few weeks. The guy that bought my ae82 off me was a mechanic at Toyota and said they are all oil guzzlers.
Ironically though, my 4agze burns nothing, I loooooove my GZE

the reason the 4agze dosnt drink as much oil is you dont need to rev it like a 4age to make power, haha and as to your mums car munki i cant imagine her doing many 6000rpm plus changes, let me guess its an auto!
they drink oil through the breather because the main oil returns are on the opposite side of the head to the breather. when you strip a 4age there is always lots of oil carbon on the pistons.
just put a catch can in with a return to the sump and this will fix the problem.
mick
p.s and as to what a toyota mechanic say about anything to do with cars id take with a grain of salt. not all but the large portion of them and that goes for all dealer mechanics.

Whatever you do don't put a return from the catch can to the sump.
I put one in recently without the return line & boy am I glad, I get alot of condensation in the can & it ends up being a 50/50 mix of oil & water, something you really don't want in your sump.
I've been using the catch can for about 6 months now, and I tip a small amount out of it every so often, but in the 6 months there would be a pretty small amount of oil actually coming out of it. If I had never emptied the can it'd be about 1/3 full by now, with alot of that being water.
