Water-Air Intercooling Questions ...

Hi, I've been wondering lately about water to air intercooling.
I'm planning to put a AE101 4AGZE in my RA23 daily driver, and want to retain the stock look. Bunging a big IC out the front, or chopping the bonnet for the top-mount interwarmer that comes on the 4AGZE, therefore isnt an option.
This led me to thinking about air-to-water intercooling. I do plan to run a pulley kit in the future (to up the boost) and I have heard that the cores are a little cheaper as well. Can I mount the core somewhere in the engine bay so it remains hidden? I will definately need to upgrade the radiator (probably get a black one too, so it dosent look new) so the performance of the cooling system should be adequate, or at least COULD be adequate
Another thing, the supercharger is pretty small, and I dont want to be running long air intake pipes, therefore retaining engine response.
Does anyone know the thermodynamics surrounding water to air intercooling? The water jacket temperature is going to run from 90 degrees upwards (?) ... what is the normal temperature for the intake charge? surely it isnt that high. If that's the case, I wonder how water to air intercooling is going to do anything other than heat up the intake charge :/
Surely they work somehow tho, GT4s came with them didnt they?
Any ideas/corrections welcome.
TIA

What's wrong with a front mount? RA23's have stacks of room, and if you paint it black no-one will notice it. Even if they do it will just look like a radiator/oil cooler/whatever.

Water to air runs a separate radiator so your engine coolant temp won't come into it. If you want to do a cheap trial on it you weld a box around your factory cooler with water outlets, pinch the pumps, radiator etc from some fool in a WRX going FMIC and give it a try. It has the advantage over FMIC of stealth, very short pipework, more efficient at low speeds and less affected by heat soak than factory GZE setup.

Arr, so it dosent use the normal engine cooling system, that makes a bit more sense...
Purple_Beasty: when you say pinch the radiator and (electric?) pumps from a wrx, do you mean that the wrx has a water to air setup stock? I have no idea on the setup, coz they've never interested me (they arent Toyota or Mazda are they!)
I'm guessing if i could fit the water-to-air core in the place of the std GZE IC (if it actually clears the bonnet) then I wont have to change the length of the intake piping at all. Then I just run water hoses to another radiator (dont know where I'm going to put it) and an inline electric pump. Sounds simple enough.
Welding a box around the std IC is a good idea, I might experiment with that, ta
Still, anyone know the cost of a second hand water to air core perchance? And what cars run them stock?
Norbie: yeah, im sure I could hide a FMIC, just covering all other options before I make my final decision ...
Ta

**WOW** a WRX with water to air cooler?? Never seen one..
I think he means the RS turbo liberty from 90-92.
Anybody who has one of the pumps/cooler setups off a RS turbo wants money for them. The pump alone is $700 from subaru.
Better off buying a Davies/Craig booster pump ($180) and modding a series 5 RX 7 core to do the cooling. You will still need to rum a fairly large air conditioning condensor up front to keep the charge cool.
The whole setup will cost you more than a front mount (R32/33 GTR cooler = $750-850), if you are incapable of performing any of the fabrication work yourself.

Oops, my bad. Yes I did mean a Legacy/Liberty. I forgot also how rare they are in Oz compared to NZ, there are so many of them floating around over here that parts are real cheap. My 3T-GTEU/TRD water to air intercooler combo is using all the Subaru gear and was $800 NZ for the whole engine package.
Using the standard intercooler is the best trial option as very little cost involved and no changes to the pipework. No real loss if you were going to replace it anyway. Another option is S4/S5 RX7 intercooler boxed up, there are very few factory water/air setups but fabricating your own is cheaper than running new pipework for a front mount.
