Hi all,

I'm new to this forum atm .... but I'm considering a changeover engine for my RA65 Cel...looking at going to a 1jzgte manual....

just wondering if anyone out there has done this install and or has any information (apart from the 'it produces 280hp') about the engine itself...

I've looked around on the net but haven't found a great deal of info?

Anyone have any thoughts / suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Confused

2 words for you: VERY HARD

I was considering the same thing myself a year ago... decided to buy a MA61 supra and do the 1jz-gte into that.

there'a guy called matt green (i think) who put a 1jz-gte into his ra23 celica, and you'll encounter much the same problems as him.
it is a BIG engine to be putting into a 4-cyl engine bay. also consider you're adding a lot of weight to the front of your car, so handling will suffer.

also, the RA65 has a live axle, not LSD, so you're going to spin off every start.
plus the drive shaft and diff are weaker in the RA65 than the MA61.

just a few ideas for you... if you're looking for an easy conversion.. this isn't it. but if you're totally commited, you can make it work

the engine itself is great... stock produces around 280bhp... an can be modeded to 250KW at the wheels without too much effort

What's having a live axle or LSD got to do with the grip on takeoff?

Anyway, I wouldn't bother with a 1JZ, not unless you don't plan to go around corners.

Do a search. This topic has been covered numerous times before.

correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't one wheel spin a lot while the other got less power?
or is LSD mainly for cornering, so the inside right doesn't light up so easily

Actually RA65's have IRS, and most of them have an F series diff just like the MA61... no LSD though. And yes, LSD makes a big difference to grip on takeoff!

Oh yeah, and I agree that putting a 1JZ into a Celica is not such a smart idea. It will work out cheaper to sell the Celica and buy a Supra, then put the 1JZ into that. I know a guy who's selling modified MA61 crossmembers which make a 1JZ a direct bolt in, so that makes the job even easier!

my ra65 had LSD before i broke it Laughing

ra65...nice car
1jzgte...nice motor

1jzgte in ra65... nightmare !

get a 1uzfe (v8 32 valve horsepower machine) it is bascially the same weight as a 22re and will fit nicely and also has around 300hp standard

you've been visiting fyshwick haven't you max? Smile

and yeah, as max and les will tell you, the 1G-GTE goes quite nicely into an RA6x, and gives it a fair wallop of power

3 things
1 1jzgte in RA23 is not EASY but not as hard as people say

2. a 1jzgte weighs about 30 KG more than the stock 18rc (i weighed them both same scales same day) .If the mounts are done correctly the engine can be mounted low and rearward .matts ra23 with 1jz sat about 130 mm further forward than mine an about 50 mm higher .once the Battery goes in the boot you have less than 20 KG difference .With the c4 auto and a 9 inch diff the weight distribution is actually more balanced than the original setup

Matts conversion was so heavy becasue he added power steering and the entire abs system .Plus heaps of other heavy little beasty bits to the engine bay .On the weigh in at the Toyota Nationals his car was 50 KG heavier than other 1j Celicas

an RA23 with a 1jzgte auto weighs 1180 KG (weighbridge ticket for engineer). My ra23 with a 1ggze was the same weight

Having said that i think the supra is a better option .for all round handling

3. how the fuck do you get 250 RWKW from a stock 1j .AND dont tell me Martin donnan .His 1/4 mile time's ABSOLUTLEY DO NOT refelect this much power ive seen a soaer run the same time's with 200 RWKW

OHH yeah 1jz links
you may find a few things on here

http://www.racecraft.com.au/
http://trdnw.com/catalog.html

i have heaps more but cant rememer where i saved the link i'll find them and post later

I'm pretty sure I said almost stock. maybe I should ahve said "stock internals"
I meant to anyhow.
3" pipe, cold air intake with pod filter, rebuilt turbos, tweaked computer.
plus a re-machined head if you're into that.. apparently you can get a decent kick out of that.
