Hey hey,Im in the process of buying a highflowed CT20 and the bloke has found after taking it off it has a cracked exhaust housing. My questions are,do they modify the housing when high flowing? what would cause it to crack and is it a sign that it may be thrashed, where I can find another housing??
cheers

its a sign that its been used. its been really hot if its cracked, or its been hot and someone has thrown water on it ![Razz](images/smiley_icons/tongue.gif)
either way, its time to get a new exhaust housing.

Toyota turbos seem to get cracks in the exhaust housing between the outlet and the wastegate. Is that where yours has cracked?
It doesn't seem to cause any real dramas. My CT20-B is cracked there and is fine. I've talked to heaps of people with CT20s and all cracked in the same spot.
Cheers

Good luck finding a CT20 housing that is not cracked! Regardless of driving style, boost etc, its just the constant thermal loading of warm up/cool down cycles that causes them to crack.
In theory, it could affect boost response, as it may provide a passage for exhaust gases to escape before the turbine, but in reality it may not make much of a noticeable difference.

I've got one without any cracks.
There are casting marks in the thing that lead me to believe that the turbo was originally designed without an internal gate... but no cracks.

Are we talking about a 3TGTE CT20 in this thread, or a late model 3SGTE CT20B (or one of its various other names?
Cheers
