1UZ clickclack on startup

I started my 1uz tonight the same as I always do.
The only difference is that today is probably the coldest day I have ever started the car (about 15degC), but I don't know if that is relevant.
Anyway, I had this weird clack sound.
It was very consistant.
clack clack clack clack pause clack clack pause for 2 secs, and then started again.
Would have done this for a good few mins.
Stopped the car, took off the accessories belt, tried it again, did it, so its not the p/s, alt, fan, or any idler pulleys.
This leaves the 2 cams, the crank, waterpump, and any idler bearings on the timing belt.
Its much louder in the valley at the front (sound coming up the front covers), so to me it sounds like the waterpump.
I drove the car home (8km), and the temp was fine, so the water pump is still working.
The sound had also stopped by the time I got home.
Any have any ideas?
My money is on the water pump

is the speed of the clacks at crank speed or cam speed?
maybe not enough oil getting to X (bearing? valves?)
does the source of the sound smove around, ie front to back of engine, or too hard to tell?
can you screwdriver stethoscope the water pump to see if it's the cause?

Can't remember if the click increased with revs.
If it happens tomorrow I will definately check that.
Its definately a stationary sound at the front of the motor.
Can't get to water pump to test with screwdriver without taking covers off.

Sticky valve maybe?
On some of these first start in 1/2 cut after coming from japan tap tap tap for a few secs to a minuet or so until it has heat and a few revs.
they have very lite vales = lite vale springs and does not take much to get them stuck.
it may never do it again.
just a thought
MATT.

Sure it's not in the valvetrain? What oil are you using?

It happened again when I just started the car then (2pm).
But I definately sounds like its coming out of the front engine covers.
I'm now leaning towards the timing belt tensioner, or one of the timing belt bearings.
I'll check the starter motor solanoid, make sure thats not clicking in and out, but if its not that I'm just gonna wait until sometihng breaks.

Quite update.
Since this happened the first time last friday, whenever I start the motor it dies straight away, and then the next time it starts it runs like a hairy dog for about 15 seconds, and is fine after that.
I'll be pulling the front covers off tonight to look at the timing belt, eliminate that as the problem.
