there is a bit of surface rust on the bores of an 18r block and i want to get the pistons out to assess the bore condiion
(beyond the obvious bits of rust of coourse) and replace the rings.
if i hammer from the bottom i am worried one of the pieces of rust may not flake off and will jam the piston and break a ring land. is there a way to get them out while beilng 100 percent certain nothing could go wrong.
i was going to go at it with 1200grit wet/dry but that still won't get close to the edge of the piston and the block bore where they meet. any methods?
oh and i tried removing the crank but i can't break the seal holding the rods in otherwise i was wondering if you could take the pistons out via the bottom.
i set wd40 in the block last night.
tried this morning and it did move slightly.
enough to remove the caps and then the crank and then the pistons were able to be hit from both sides. a few taps each way more wd40 and they slowly came out.
i did use a whole can though and you are right. it doesn't seeem to penetrate much.
now i have another issue.
the no.1 piston looks like it had spun a bearing., the rod has been eaten out on the side not much left of the bearings and the crank journal has a very rough feel to it compared to the other journals.
sigh
so much for cheap rebuild.
hey are 18rc rods the same as 18rg?
i will search but if you are quicker...
