code 25 and 26 for a 4age

Cousin just spalshed down $6g's on a 4age MR2 and the engine light is pissing out code 25 and 26. Which apparently relates to a rich/lean fuel condition.
I'm not able to check the car out in person, but it sounds to me like it could be a leak in the intake, or a bodgy Air Flow meter, altho the AFM has it's own error code.
Can anybody shed some light on what could cuase these 2 codes?
what usually sets off these codes?
thanx heaps to whoever can help me out on this one.

yeah, thats how i found out about the codes relating to a rich/lean condition, thanx for the help tho.
i'm trying to help my cousin sort it out over the phone, he just got the MR2 at some shonky car dealer, so shonky that every tire is a different brand, the rotors are warped, the engine flashes error codes! and they said they put new brakes in, but they did not.
Anyway was hoping someone might of had the same codes flash on there check light and could tell me what it was and how they fixed it. Especially if it's a 86kw 4age.

First off, pull out the main engine fuses for 30 seconds plus as this will get the ECU to lose all codes. Then drive it and see what codes flash up then.
It could be a faulty oxygen sensor.
Too late now but worthwhile getting an idependent mechanical check before you buy the car ?

yeah i told my cousin to take out the efi fuse for 30 seconds last night, he said he found the fuse but it was a smallish 15amp type fuse, I thought it would of been the bigger round type. In any case the codes dissapeared and as far as i know haven't returned. So is it possible with those old codes in memory that the computer was operating in a safe mode or some cut back mode becuase it thought the problems were still there?
He says he got 200km's of a full tank, o2 sensor is almost garanteed to be screwed. I will get him to try another one and see how he goes, altho an o2 wouldn't cuase the fuel economy to go that shit with a 1.6 litre engine would it?
your not wrong when you say to get a car checked out before buying. He rushed into it i think. If i was over in melbourne i woulda test drove it and test for codes etc b4 splashing $6k for a car. Oh well at least he got a toyota.
