Grey imports chassis number plate

Has anybody seen an grey import with a steel Chassis number plate welded on? I've only ever seen them riveted on but a RTA PDF said they could be welded, I've just never seen it done before, it would make it a lot harder for them to drill the rivets and check the original jap chassis number!
Most the ones I have seen are plastic, I have seen one stainless steel one but it was also riveted but imagine if it was welded right around the perimeter, would make it difficult to check the original identy of the vehicle.
Surely for this reason they wouldn't allow it!
I don't know why they even allow the original numbers to be covered over, it's not like any one can accidently revert to using the jap number because it doesn't have enough characters.

That's what I would have expected. My new import has the plate riveted over the old jap number, thought it was odd. Would make it very easy to clone cars.... I've got two white MR2s, it would be easy to make a new plastic label and rivet it over the chassis number on my Australian one, and use the import rego for both cars!
Only trouble is if RTA decide to drill the rivets and find the wrong chassis number, I would think they would keep records of the imported jap chassis number?
But maybe if it was welded on....Would they ever bother even to drill the rivets?

the "aussie" number is a derivative of the jap one. and no the rta wouldnt have records of this however DOTARS certainly do. for instance my jap number is aw11-01XXXXX where nmy aussie one is 6U9000AW1101XXXXX so all it is doing is taking the jap number then adding a padding infront of it. this is what ive seen on all imports ive looked at.

Yeah I've noticed they normally pad out the factory number but mines totally unrelated. hope it's all legit, I read some where that it can be anything just it's common to use the original number, I bought the car with a blown motor and I'm only just about to get it registered. Its been out of rego for about a year.
Has anybody had difficult registering an import after rego lapsing or moving interstate?
The vin number is 6t91mpraaalyan####. I'm worried it could be race/rally only but it does have an Australian compliance plate from nippon car imports, I don't believe race/rally ones have that plate, only the new chassis number plate, if registed as a rally car.

my guess would be contact where you bought it off to clarify, then next stop if you cant get in contact ith them would be to try and contact DOTARS, i dont know how helpful they would be but its worth a try.

I bought it privately, the guy said it was registered before but he had handed in the number plates when it ran out of rego. I did a revs check, but that doesn't really help in this regard.
I will just try registering it tomorrow or the next day and see.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

if it was previously registed then it should be ok. assuming ti was registered without restrictions such as rally vehicle only.
you dont happen to have any of the imprtation paperwork do you ?

No paper work apart from receipt, I hope to get the rego papers from him, I will ask for import papers as well. Hope he hasn't changed numbers....

You should ALWAYS keep a copy of all the relevant import documents and engineers cert/compliance paperwork!!!
Most Notably:
- Vehicle Import Approval
- Engineers Cert
- Compliance Paperwork
Without these you could be arse-reamed if rego COMPLETELY runs out.
