I have browsed the ToyMods website searching for 1G info and found all your inputs very helpful. Great work!
I am getting a 1982 RA60 shipped over from east Malaysia in May. The previous owner has swapped the original engine with a 4AGE20v silver top & it is matched to the original gearbox (gearbox housing cut and welded), the car is very draggy because of the mismatched engine output & gearbox ratio. The fuel consumption is high too.
I have found a 1GGTEU half-cut with automatic transmission for RM2200 (1AUS$ = RM2.9), so far I cannot find a manual half-cut yet, even the gearbox alone is quite rare. The shop is willing to swap the auto and give a 1GFE manual gearbox and the flywheel instead for another RM400.
Is it the same as the 1GGTE manual gearbox? If not, do you guys think it is a good idea? Will it last? Or stick with the auto? I am not going to do any power upgrade to the 1G engine.

I'm pretty sure the 1gfe gearbox is the 6 speed, so RM400 for it and a flywheel is a bargain. I'd take it

You have to find out what year the 1G FE gearbox is.
It could be the 6 speed made under licence for Toyota by Getrag for the Altezza / Lexus IS200. These came out in 1999.
OR....
It could be any old W55, W57 or W58 gearbox from a GA70 series Supra (for example) which did come with the 1G-GE or any other Toyota with the 1G-FE motor. My research found that the 1G-FE was made by Toyota well before the IS200 6 speed manual was sold by Toytota.
Given all of that....a W57 or W58 will hold up fine behind a stock 1G-GTE and be a similar or in fact cheaper price than the 6 speed box.

I will go and find out the gearbox number this weekend. The one they offered to swap should be a 5-speed. Another shop has the 6-speed with a Beams 1GFE from an Altezza but no engine management system and wont sell the gearbox separately. Thank you both for your replies.
