icon4.gif  Diff mounting? Wed, 06 April 2005 00:46 Go to next message
Had a bit of a problem with teh RAV on the weekend (ho-hum, so what else is new...), the right-rear CV popped right out of the diff and shredded the boot. Lucky this happened in 1st gear. Apparently the reason why this happened is because the mounting bolts from the diff bracketry to the chassis cross-rail had become loose and one had fallen out completely. Shocked

I'll try and get a pic of the diff mounting points from it's install last year, but it's just two big bolts going through 5mm steel and into the chassis. Is there any other way of mounting this back up a bit more solidly than it was? I'll get a pic up as soon as I can.

This thing must have been generating a fair bit of torque at the diff for the bolts to loosen like that... Embarassed

Bolts usually become loose from constant exposure to vibrations and/or heat cycling, both of which would be generated by the diff. I'd suggest using Loctite next time.

Good suggestion. Do you use Loctite along the entire thread?

A single drop is all you need. The bottle comes with directions.

Picture isn't the best, but that's what is holding the diff to the body. A 5mm thick piece of steel held in by two large bolts through to the cross-section of the chassis rails. There's another two bolts (one visible) that go into the diff from the mount to stabilise it. Take away that bracket and the welds to it and you have that "U" shaped bracket by itself which, if you rotate 90° clockwise, is how the original RAV4 diff bolted up. The two bolts that are holding the existing bracket into place are bolted into the same holes that the RAV4 diff bracket used for it before.

Just wondering if there are any other possible mounting points I could take advantage of. I pick up the car tomorrow morning and I'm going to have to drive it back VERY carefully. Anyone know a good metal worker or fabricator I could take it to? Rolling Eyes
