ST162 Engine swap - halfcuts and emissions

Please forgive me if this has been asked before, I have done a search and not come up with too much.
At the moment I am tossing up between two choices for an engine swap for my ST162 Celica:
- 3rd gen 3SGE from a Celica halfcut from Japan
- 2nd gen 3SGE from an Australian delivered MR2 rear cut
As far as I know, there is emissions gear fitted to Australian delivered cars (EGR etc) that cars sold in Japan would not be required to have. Would the imported motor still be OK here or would it not comply and therefore need emissions gear fitted to it or something?
Obviously I would prefer the 3rd gen 3SGE but if emissions etc are going to be a pain then the earlier version from the MR2 looks good because at least it will already have it fitted. I don't know all that much about the rules and regs for this so if anyone can shed some light or point me in the right direction that would be great. I don't want to splashing out on something that may turn out to be illegal or get me defected.
Cheers guys,
Matt

I don't really know, but id say if it didn't comply with standards it wouldn't be too hard to make it comply. i.e. chuck a cat on.
OR.... go a 3sgte!!!! yeeeeeeeees!

You have answered your own question here mate. If you want to be sure you are always 100% legal then your only choice is the Aust. spec MR2 engine.
But there is no reason the 3rd gen can't be made to comply with a cat con and careful tuning, if you want to go to that level and find the right guys with the right gear to do this.
Certainly, paperworkwise, the MR2 is the best choice, but given that you are just replacing a 3S-GE with another one, do you need to "declare" it at all ? Isn't it not just a notification of the new engine number ? If that is all then go the 3rd gen 3S-GE and enjoy the extra power !

Yeah it would just be a notification of the new engine no - still a 2.0L 4 cylinder 3SGE so that's all that's needed as far as I know.
I just spoke to the RACQ Technical Advice line about this and the guy told me there should be no problem at all, as long as the engine is from a newer vehicle (check) and whatever emissions equipment was fitted to that engine is hooked up and functional, ie no pipes left unconnected or anything. Seems that the main things that Qld Transport is concerned about is fitting older engines to newer cars, or fitting engines that your car was never manufactured with. He told me that fitting an imported 3SGE would not need a mod plate or anything, so looks like 3rd gen 3SGE is the go!
Oh and cycleofabuse I'm not interested in a turbo, been planning an N/A 3SGE swap for a while!
Thanks for the replies fellas.
