Transmission oil spilt on the interior carpet leaves a long lasting smell, longer lasting than any air freshener. SO if you're into that sort of smell it might be a goer.
If you prefer something nicer I use Shell brand airfreshener, vanilla scent. It's a spray on type (spray on the carpets etc) covers other smells pretty well. Doesn't have a long lasting scent though so it needs reapplication once a week or so.
Ideally you want something that smells so strong it makes your eyes sting, does anyone know of anything that good?

i use those fragrances at commercial car wash joints.
its only a dollar and the smell stays for a good 2weeks or more.
i prefer to wash my car at home though.

I've got a couple of hundred Rats and Mice living in a room next to the garage. I have to keep the windows up on the Celica so the smell of them doesn't permeate through the interior.

I find those air fresheners make your car smell like a public toilet.

Hi,
Vanilla. I got some vanilla thing, shaped like a chick. For the first few days it's a bit strong, but after that it's quite subtle and mixes well with the smell of old leather, oil, petrol and other wonderous odours that good classics seem to get over time.
