AFM maximum measuring capacity calc (flap-type) Sat, 09 April 2005 12:55 Go to next message
Hey - I know I should know these things seeing as I studied fluid mechanics in University (although I never bothered to actually complete the course) but I was wondering how you can calculate the maximum flow that an AFM can measure - ie given that the spring must have force 'x' applied to it to fully compress/bind how much air would be required to generate that force?

I also studied fluid mechanics, but i did finish my course, but the only advice i can offer you is this.

flap airflow meters are shit, avoid them at all costs.

use hotwire or MAP sensorn for airflow, if its in a stock car, just dont even worry about it.

Flap type air flow meters have their pros and cons, transient response is always a question mark with flap-type airflow meters and also it is clear that they are a restriction on the intake - also their shape isn't favourable (a square shaped passage will have more surface area per unit volume than a circle - not good).

Oh and also at higher flow rates the accuracy can be questionable (as the surface area decreases).

Any other help though - I really need to work this one out!

im guessin you have a standard ecu but most afterarket ecu;s are able to calculate how much you are maxing out ur afm if it still uses it someone with powerfc or something should be able to find out something for u i know that it uses the afm unless u get the expensive model, a m8 of mine has a standard ecu was able to work out what his afm was doing when he put it on a dyno maybe ask a dyno tuning place?
