50 series tyres for 14" wheels Mon, 11 April 2005 01:13 Go to next message
Hi all,

Just looking for a new set of tyres for my 14" wheels on my car. It was imported with 185/50 (pretty sure they were 185?)14's im pretty sure and for the RWC i bought some shitty second hand 185/60 because the 50's werent available.

Now, i've been to a couple of tyres stores and apparently 50's aren't available in Australia, and to buy them they have to be imported over. The guy that served me just said it wasnt worth my while to get them shipped and said to go for 185/60 14's.

Does anyone know of a place, firstly in Melbourne that sells 50 series tyres for 14" wheels. And if not, anywhere around Australia that has them.

Some name and numbers would be good

Cheers

Check the tyre placard on either the b-pillar, edge of the door, or inside the glove box.

That will tell you what tyres you need to run.

Yeh i've checked the tyre placard on the edge of the door of the door and the complience guys put that in. It says to run 185/60's but i want a stretched look on the tyres and also lower profile.

Something like this:

...but not as much..

Yeh, wish i could have the cash for it.
But i have some genunie superlight watanabe tye 14" from japan.
It the wheel i've always wanted, so i wouldnt really want to get rid of it unless i get something like that in 15's.

Only if you could buy it for me CrUZsida.. Smile

Apparently the 175/60 14" tyres are the same as the 195/50 14" tyres (from japan or on japanese imported cars).

Not sure how it works, but the second number is not a measurement in millimeters, its is a percentage measurement or something.

Anyone have any info on this or can they confirm this?

the second number is the aspect ratio. it is the sidewall height as percentage of the tyre width.
a 175 is narrower than the 195 obviously, and the 175 has a sidewall height 7.5mm taller than the 195.

also look on http://www.tyrepowermorley.com

Yeh, i've called acouple of places too, and it seems far too hard to get 50 series tyres. Most of the guys havent even heard of that size before.

Probably just end up going for the 175/60 14"

It will give that slight stretched look as well as a lower profile.

Its just a little bit thiner than the standard 185/60 that come with it.

Does anyone know the affects of going down size like that? apparenlty the speedo out of wack?!

its only about 12mm smaller in diameter so you wont really notice it visually. but it will affect the speedo as you said, but not in a bad way, it will make the speedo read fast. i.e. you will be driving slower than your speedo says. not by much though, the difference is only about 37mm in cicumference.

yeah, 37.7mm diff in circumference, 2.08% difference in speedo (reading fast)
"So when your speedo reads 70mph, you're actually travelling at 68.54mph"

Yokohama A539's come in 55/14.
Thats what I run on the front, and they are awesome.

185/55/14, on a 7 inch rim, little bit of stretch, no flex.

Yeh, the speedo difference i guess could be used in a good way. Going at 50 in a 50km zone will ensure ur doing under the limit (fukn cops Mad )

Skaney - Yeh, Yokohama A539's 185/55 is a perfect size, but since the A539 is last years model and the C-Drive is the updated version (this years) of it, im not really too sure if it comes in 185/55.
Do you know if they still sell the A539 brand new? because im pretty sure they only sell the C-Drive. Thats what the doodes at the tyre store i went to said??!!

I'll double check with acouple of tyre stores, but either way ill go 175/60 or 185/55. Prob go Yokos or the Potenza GIII's.

Thanks for all the tech info STR8 2.8 and that wicked site skellator. That site has alot of valuable info, inc. excellent diagrams.

Cheers all
