ok, here is my problem. I have an 88 model sc aw11. and everynow and then my engine check light comes on. but the weird thing is, as soon as I the car is turned off, then back on, the light is no longer on. and it takes a varried amount of time, and nothing in perticular that makes it come back on.
Now i do not have any info on what 2 prongs to connect in the dignostic box, nor what any of the codes would mean.
So if anyone can help by either suggesting what might be wrong, or by giving me info on what 2 prongs to connect and what the codes mean.
any help would be greatly apprectiated.
P.S. if it means anything, not that long before I first noticed the engine light on, my speedo stoped working.

You'll get the check engine light if the speedo issn't working. There is a signal sent from the speedo head to the computer to let it know car speed for this like idle when coming to a stop etc.
The other common one is a bad oxygen sensor. Get in and have a look at what codes you're getting though, there's no point just speculating.

Its probably a bad earth at the other side of the speedo gauge, an intermittant wire break or contact problem, or a fault on the sender side.
But, as already said, best not to speculate...find out for sure.

I am experiencing this problem right now. I have checked the codes and i got a 'speedo fault' I think it was code 42
Yes sometimes the light doesnt come on at all, sometimes it comes on after 20 minutes sometimes 5 minutes. I havent had time to check the cable yet or the gearbox adaptor thing. Is your speedo working?

no my speedo is not working, it stopped working about 15 mins before the light came on so I was figuring it had something to do with that.
It even more sounds like the speedo is the problem, as sometimes, maybe one in 10 times my car will stall coming up to a stop.
But if this is true why would the worning light come on randomly, does it really take that long for the ecu to cheak the systems???
well anyway thanx for your help, I will try replacing the speedo cable this weekend. Does anyone know where I might be able to get one, as I doubt my luck at a wreakers being I have never seen an mr2, yet alone a aw11

The warning light has a few trigger conditions that need to be met for it to light about a speedo drive.
The car has to be running for a certain amount of time above a certain amount of revs and under a certain amount of load. This means if the driving you do doesn't match any one of those pre-requisites the light will not come on.
I had the same issue last time my car was on the road and generally I'd get to the motorway before the light came on.

I have had it come on in 60k areas (once or twice), where I have not been on a faster speed road, although I do reach the speed limit quite quickly
