22r intake and exhaust Mon, 11 April 2005 10:29 Go to next message
I have a 98 2wd hilux with the 22r carburated engine

I know I cant get much more power from this engine but I would like to try and free it up a litle bit and increase the throtle responce. It just seems to rev slowley.

What I am planning on doing is getting extractors and replacing the second muffler in the system (big long one) with a smaller "turbo flow type muffler" (oval with the pipe offset in the centre to give decent flow but still keep it quiet) It doesnt have a 'cat' in it so there is no restiction there.

I would also like to get a more free flowing intake on it aswell but I cant find a replacement K&N for the factory canister.
Could I just put a pod on the end of the intake pipe where the canister is now?

I am going to leave the factory carb and just get a good tune up, maybe get it cleaned and rebuilt.

turbo muffler will do bugger-all on it's own - get extractors and decent sized zorst piping thru-out (e.g. over 2") to help engine breath.

what i can't work out is how you can have a carbi-driven '98 model vehicle - i would have expected nearly every vehicle made in '98 to be efi ?

It's because commercial vehicles like the Hilux don't have to comply with the same strict emissions standards as passenger cars, so they can get away with installing a much cheaper carby engine. Things are changing though which is why new Hilux's have EFI now.

Bump

Anybody know if I can just plumb on a pod filter to replace the factory canister since I cant find a k&n direct replacement?

Im guess I should be able to, not like there is any sensors etc.

What sort of exhaust setup should I look at from extractors back? Keep in mind I want to keep it quiet, hopefully not much more louder than factory, but still want to free it up a bit.
