my car now idles, but at what cost? Mon, 11 April 2005 11:04 Go to next message
recently i had a hunting idle problem, which was kinda annoying because it would hunt between 2500RPM and 3500 RPM, so not really much of an idle at all.

after reading witzls comments in 4AGTE vacuum lines, i pulled the throtle body off and had a look at it, then just blanked off the idle up air bypass completely, as there are no coolant lines running through my TB.

i just used flat sheet steel, cut out with a nibbler, which took ages. before i drive it i am going to seal it all with gasket shit,

is this fix dodgy? and if so, how dodgy?

cheers,

i did the same on my 4age and it used to run bad on cold mornings for about 5 minutes until it warmed up a bit and then it was fine.

as long as your plate was relatively flat, and tightening the bolts down isn't going to bend it out of shape, it's perfectly alright. if you need it better, go to a metal place, and get a thicker piece out of their scrap bin and trace yours onto it and use an angle grinder to cut it out

the plate is pretty flat, should be better with gasket goo, i have been thinking of just siliconing up the thermostat bit and bolting it back on, but at least with the plate i can reverse it.

fixed it a bit more properly, cut a copy of the gasket out of alluminium plate with the nibbler, i think it has nibbled its last nibble now.

bought some RTV gasket stuff too and used that, should be cool now.
