RA28 V8 upgrade? Mon, 11 April 2005 12:17 Go to next message
Hi All,

I've got a RA28 with No engine and I'm thanking about putting a V8 in it but I don't want to cut into the body too much. Because the body has no cancer and only has one dint in the back left quater panel. I would like to know what size V8 I can put into it without to many modes??
I was thinking that I might need a roll cage! Also mini tubs (maybe)

So I would like to get some ideas!
Thanks All

Ta22VsRa28.

well there's been a few threads recently talking about inserting 1UZ-FE's (4 litre DOHC V8) into RA28s

the general consensus seems to be that:
it's a god-awful expensive engine upgrade
it will require significant engineering costs and work
it probably wont be legal in most states

mini tubs are if you want to run uber-large/fat rims - is not directly related to V8 conversion.

a quick search on 1UZ should find a few recent threads relating to this extremely sexy sounding engine.

but... if you're keen (and wealthy), it would be a mighty wild thing to do.

A Rover 3.5L V8 could be made to fit in an RA28. This, a roll cage and mini tubs will make your car more on the extreme side of the modified ledger.......
If you plan to drive (and insure this thing) legally on the road, then speak to an engineer first and then come back to this forum with questions.

a rover v8 powered TA23 showed up at our cruise last weekend, was a mint conversion, nice fit in the engine bay (same as the RA28's except crossmember in case anybody doesn't know), but he had converted to rack and pinion and it didn't look like you could get pitman arm steering in there. this would be the main problem IMO, its doable but not really easy. there's a good thread about the R&P conversion in an RA28 somewhere.........

pic of the V8 anyway:

Let me get this straight.....You don't want to cut the body but you do want mini-tubs...... Rolling Eyes

1UZ conversion could be relatively cheap if you kept it auto. It's putting a manual box behind it that will break the bank.

I wouldn't bother with the rover motor. Not when you can get a 1UZ for a grand.

I have to agree with Gold28 on this, the 1UZ will be the go as long as you can get around the engineering issues
Weight should be close to or lighter than the original motor

It should fit without firewall mods maybe just a little releif where the starter buldge is on the top of the bellhousing to allow the box to slide in and out inedpendant of the motor
but this will depend on how far you want the motor back

Rocker covers will slide under the brake booster and clutch slaves
I'm not sure on what sump you would require in a RA28 but someone else maybe able to help as there are 3 sump options

I don't know this one for sure but i have been told that if you offset the motor slightly you can squeez the exhaust out past the steering box ,..in my case in the 22 i have a rack and pinion and didn't get the chance to check if this would work , besides the 28 has more room so it may work

but either way any of the v8 will require a bit of work to fit

I seem to remember there was a group in Queensland who were selling Toyota V8 / Toyota 5 Speed into a TA/RA celica conversion kits a few years ago, but not sure of that info now. RA28 V6 to start on an RA28/V6 conversion myself, so i may be able to give you a few hints and tips v6 i go along. (the v6 is a smaller engine, but a bit heavier, so my mods may take me in a different direction. The RA60 is already fitted to a RA60, so i think most of the hard work is done for me.

I just read the previous post and cringed. The general idea is i have an RA60 with a V6 which is going into an RA28.
Does that make any more sense?
