accessing heater core in ma61 with intact AC - easy? Mon, 11 April 2005 14:58 Go to next message
the heater in my MA61 has developed a leak that's slowly soaking the carpet on the driver's side.

Does the centre AC/heater unit come out without requiring the AC to be moved or ungassed?

having spent a small fortune getting the AC working, i'm a bit reluctant to do something that results in the (seemingly goldplated) gas escaping or causing some kind of costly damage.

yes, i'll also dive into the Mk 2 TSRM, but any experiences?

(my experience with an RA40 is that the AC unit gets in the way of the central heater/distribution box).

tia, charles.

You wont want to hear this. But yes, the AC unit/blower thingo does get in the way of the heater assembly/blower thingo. I had to move the AC unit to access and pull out the heater core, hence, you will probably need to undo the AC and regas it (I didnt bother putting the AC back).

Normally you can detach the AC lines from the bodywork in the engine bay, and then unbolt the AC unit from the blower and heater units, this should give you between 5 and 10mm of movement which should be just enough to slide the heater unit out.

You *can* remove the core without disconnecting the aircon. That said, you can only *just* do it. I managed to do it in the Celica, and pray to god I never have to do it in the XX, it's a shit of a job.

I removed the A/C so that is easy, but I pray that I never have to touch the heater core, 'cause it would be a shite of a job, A/C or not !!!

good to hear - I think I may have to do that soon Sad aircon is not hooked up, but I get nothing but cool air coming thru aircon, even set to 30 degrees. of course, I dont have the in-cabin sensor hooked up yet.
