MA70 Intercooler Setups Tue, 12 April 2005 03:02 Go to next message
I am looking at installing a larger front mount intercooler on my MKIII Supra which runs a 7M-GTE. I currently have a HKS unit on there(which will be for sale at some point) which is a direct replacement for the original but am looking to go larger. I want to run a core with the tanks on the sides rather than top to bottom like the current setup. The problem with this is the piping layout of the 7M requiring the pipe from the turbo to cooler to go across the intercooler to meet up to the end tank.
Alot of people have done this already BUT has anyone still managed to keep the engine undercover plastic thingy, I want to keep this. Also curious what if anything did you need to relocate to make room for the core and what size was the core?

Thanks in advance for any constructive input
Dan

I'm also interested in people's experience. I'd like to get a rough idea of cost and difficulty, of piping and bends.

celicaboy2000 had a massive front mount on his MA70 from what I saw, is he still around?

I think the biggest problem is if you want to keep the factory undercover, which does aid in airflow and cooling. Most setups I see have that eliminated and the core hangs low. What I am thinking is the go is having the pipe from the turbo run inside the recess of the undercover across to the passenger side of the car and then meet up with the tank of the cooler. From what I have been told, side to side air-flow is the way to go, or atleast with the turbo size I have. It seems that by modifying the brakcet that holds the bonnet catch you can make some extra room. Shouldnt need to cut into the bumper reinforcement. Would be nice to see someones setup to get an idea of what core size can be acommmodated. The pic below is of the HKS core I currently run which is a direct replacement for the stock core

I had a 600x300x76 Greddy cooler, Ill post some pics but I dont know how to in here... If anyone wants the pics and that can post them in Tech let me know... I spent just under a 1K for stainless steel with mandrel bends, the cooler had the intake and outlet on different sides. The pipe from the turbo housing ran behind and a little lower parallel to the bottom radiator tank to the lefthand side of the cooler (to make it neater had a slight hump near the bottom radiator hose). The outlet pipes of the cooler basically follows the same route as the factory pipes. I modified the bonnet lock support to let the cooler fit, also I mounted the cooler behind the reo. I did eventually cut the reo out and modified the bar to let more airflow to the cooler. Ummm does tht help at all?

Stenno, the piping isn't that scary. What else can you do to use a intercooler that has the inlet & outlet at different ends? I have seen alot longer intercooler tracts than what I had installed. The difference between boost lag between that setup to the standard setup wasn't that noticeable! anyhow I was happy with the result at the end Very Happy

Danners, cheers for posting up the pics.
