Lift pump Tue, 12 April 2005 13:49 Go to next message
I'm after a lift pump for my surge tank setup to go with a VL turbo pump -> 4agze. I'm in Adelaide, but willing to pay freight.
If no one has one, where can i get a suitable pump for a reasonable price?
Thanks.

You can use a VL pump as a lift pump no worries whatsoever.

My mate is using 2 VL pumps for his 1G-GTE with the surge tank and that will work fine for him.

A VL pump will lift enough!

I am sure it will but you will be pressurising the surge tank to 100 odd psi. Not ideal. All associated fittings and hoses will need to be EFI items and depending on the setup, you will be pressurising your main tank too!

When running an external surge tank, either gravity feed it or use a low pressure pump to fill it.

It is the right way to do it.

Jezza I will send you a PM....

Where did you pull 100 psi from. Honestly, it doesn't seem like you really know what you are talking about. If you want a cheap option that will work well, then i would go for a VL Punp. You don't need to go overboard. Ask around. My uncle is a drag racer, and i've passed this setup by him and he said it would work totally fine. $50 and it's yours.

Michael,

Without getting into an argument, your setup is unsafe.
Bosch fuel pumps, which is what a VL turbo pump is, when new pump fuel at a pressure of 100Psi, I may be off on the pressure, but not by much.

If you have the surge tank on the pressure side of the pump, yes it will work, but every outlet on the tank will be at the same pressure, including the over flow line back to your main tank and any filters you have. You can do it this way if you want, but ensure you use EFI hose and clamps as regular ones will not handle the pressure.

If your uncle is an experienced drag racer as you say, get him to have a look at the setup in your car, and look at ways you could make it safer. Smile

Fuel spraying around at high pressure is dangerous....

I have a normal VL pump that can be used as a lift pump. Sold the turbo one. You can have this one for only $30.

I seriously wouln't be using a high pressure pump in a lift pump situation, you'll probably find the original hoses will kill themselves very quickly. Having said that, I have a couple of low pressure lift pumps ideally sized for a 4AGZE, will PM you.

Jezza , i have a left over f18 jet pump , good for 1000psi . Should be ok as a lift pump , just run two alternators and a 24volt system to get the amperage required . Ow turn the lights off at night might help that current draw Laughing

Seriously i have lost count of how many VL pumps used as the lift / supply pump i have seen shit themself's in sprinter , IDB in richmond was famous for running them drawing from a 6mm line size to the 8mm outlet , then to a 6mm filter , then to the rail , then a 4mm return lol . This kind of shitty install on a fucked pump { alway's fucked straight away due to the installation } normally worked out at a fuel rail pressure of 83psi at idle . Yeah when about 38 is properly required for your gze . Search the tech section , dodgy fuel set up's are a death wish for you and your engine . Also i wouldn't use a VL pump if you paid me , there way to overated for the price compared with the new designs on the market now .
