TA22 Rear Windows Wed, 13 April 2005 06:01 Go to next message
I am trying to restore a 1971 TA22 Celica but I have two difficulties at the moment. Firstly does anyone know how to fix the rear windows, I have bought replacement inners but the plastic grommets all seem to break or are perished??? The second, and I feel silly to ask this, but what are the best replacement seats, mine sag and the metal bar across the back is killing my backside.

Hi mate, there are a couple of solutions for the Nylon rollers in the TA22/RA23 Celica windows. The most promising one is, use shower screen rollers. Another option, is to buy some nylon round bar stock, and machine it to suit.

For front windows, that just use the roller for positioning, a couple of Leggo tyres will work.

Honda prelude seats, can be made to fit a TA22/RA23/RA28. They even look respectable.

cheers Chuck.

There are some 25mm nylon ball bearing rollers you can get for about $3-4 a piece at bunnings. They sit on shafts with a locknut on the end. Drill out the old shafts that the nylon bushes were mounted on. This will leave a hole the exact size to place the thread of the new ball bearing roller through. Screw on the lock nut and you have a perfect replacement.

Make sure you screw the locknut on to the shaft first to put a groove in the nylon locknut, otherwise it will be near impossible to screw it on when its mounted in the window mechanism.

Overall its a heap easier than trying to machine new bushes.

Apparently MX5 seats fit quite well too, especially if you are a little tall and want to keep the seat low. I haven't sat in a celica with MX5 seats personally, but the MX5's i've ridden in have been quite comfortable. They also look quite good as a coupe seat.

can't really comment on the rear window...but mine is probably in the same boat....however, i just picked some import race seats up from a import wrecker and they look awesome in there. However, they do sit high ( look for coupe seats, generally lower set. Mounts are different since the front 2 are horizontal with the car, and the rears verticle. I had a bracket made up (a bar welded) to the original runners of the seats, then bolted the new seats onto that bar, sits a little high, but i am getting the ass sponge redone (cut thinner) so you can sit lower down. When i get the other in i will post pics.

Crok.

On the topic of windows, I have read a guide on making power windows in an ra23. I still have nfi how to do it. Does anyone know how to do this?
Not meaning to hijack the thread or anything, just while we're on the topic.

Thanks,
Lachlan.
