My dad was watching the Champ car from monday nite & the announcer said something along the line of " you may be wondering why the is so much rubber on the corners, It's beacuse we have been lucky enough this weekend to be treated to a chance to view a new motor sport known as drifting, It's amazing the cars look out of control but their not!"
How cool would that be, Watching Champ car & when their not on the track you get drift demos!!!

well the V8's used to get the donut king v8 utes and still do ripping burnouts and crazy shit so in the future i can't see why they couldn't have drifting in between races i mean bogans love nothing else then to see someone smoke it up so drifting will be quite popular with them.

thats a big call considering DA were the first to gain full television coverage, the full lock events are a one off for TV AFAIK, dont knock the DA events, i really think that it will become the D1 of australia and full lock will become the G1 of australia, and whats wrong with that? there has to be some distinction between the noobs and the pro's

Theres a lot of unknowns.. I dont know what type of guys the full lock organisers are but I know this;
They established the first Australia Wide tournament last year, and previous.. They went to the effort of getting Jap D1 drivers down here for the fans.. theyve been doing everything in their power to cater to the fan and the competitor including cheap entry fee's.
Along comes DA... approaches all the top16 drivers from previous Drift Nats events, bags the big sponsers, and hits pro competitors with a $1200 entry fee? and then secures tv coverage.
Note the $1200 entry fee makes you wonder.. it just looks like theyve dived in and stolen everything Drift Nats has built for profit.
It 'looks' that way, im not saying thats what has happened.

I dont care in the long run, but i AM worried.
Whats next, Drift Australia will approach each individual circuit and take over operations there too.. Get rid of IDA's days at driftland and charge people $500 to comepete?
Again im speculating.... but this is just all how it looks from an outsiders standpoint, I'd like someone to set the record straight.

some ways i agree with you
others i do not,
personally i think the $1200 entry fee sucks teh big one!!! but hoestly we need the distinction between who is the best and who wants to be like the best, motorsport aint cheap.
Just becuase full lock are the first that doesnt mean they can do whatever they want, this is a free country last time I looked, and competitors have a right to choose, effectively there are people that will want to remain loyal to the full lock and DA camps but then there are people that will sit on the fence, such as myself (if it were offered to me) and see whoever is offering the better package.
From what it looks like here IMO DA have the better package at the moment, and it now puts pressure on the full lock guys to improve
my 2c

this is what is happening right now in USA, 2 competitions, putting on events on the same day in the same area...
Formula Drift and the World Drift Championship
see thread alex pfiffer made @ drifting.com forums here
in aus, it can be seen as a good thing and a bad thing.
good being that DA is injecting money and publicity into our sport, and lots of it. they have also made the move into television coverage. this can only ever be seen as a good thing. fullstop. they are running a 'exhibition' event with set competitors rather than a 'entrant' style event such as DN.
its the D1 equivalent in aussie drift. only the best who are seeded through by local competition into the 'pro' series. this said, there is no governing body who gets to say whos pro and whos not. they are choosing it by previous wins in DN and only choosing certain amoutns of each car model and i suspect another variable in the selection process is who 'their mates are' and 'what they can bring' to the series... i the way of money and contacts. after all primarily its business to them, not the forward progression of the sport.
that said DN has got the grassroots level and the 'factory' level which is training up drivers and giving them a foot in the door into drift. this allows a 'feeding' effect from being a noob with no factory association to be 'picked up' by a factory and sponsored: thus moving into fatory class. then as they progress and get even bigger and better skills the pros in the factory class then move to higher levels of competition, ie. DA series (in theory).
This is all good, but with the sport in such an infancy in aust, putting events on that take away aust's best drifters from a national competiton they are expected (by the fans) to enter in are not there. people are going to feel 'ripped off' when they dont get a decent show.
the only problem i can see with the introduction of DA into the big picture is the staging of events on the same day. If DA want to make the sport bigger and therefore make more money in the long run, then they should get competitons organised between each other for seperate dates. and also organise a governing body to identify a progression from DN (G1) to DA (D1). if they dont form together it just wont work.
for the drift associations:
more 'pro' competitors = more spectators = more money.
for the drivers:
more exposure = more money for sponsors = therefore more parts/funds the drivers = better progression in skill = more money/success
pretty simple really.

Ofcourse not, I know their making a profit. But they have:
Street Class: $100 entry (no sponsorship)
Pro Class: $300 entry (sponsorship)
That is entirely fair...
But hell, If we all think out of the box for a minute.. The real question will be how will D1 allow people to enter its events in the future.. since its going international (or seems to be).
And Garth, I agree with you on all points there and share the concearns especially about 'drivers who are mates and might bring contacts and names to the comp' rather than drivers who are better skilled.. We can kinda turn a blind eye now because its in its infancy but will it continue down the line...... Will we see Lauchlan Murdock drifting a Merc so the series gets major newspaper coverage?
