I guess it would be ok in an imergency, but normally petrol has a shelf life of 30days, and its usually a week old before it gets to the consumer (you)...

petrol is what's called a hydroscopic substance, it draws in moisture from the air around it
when people say petrol goes "off", they usually mean it's been sitting in a fuel tank for so long (3 weeks or so) and has drawn in enough moisture to reduce its octane rating to the point where you'd be well advised to get a new tank of fuel if you rely on good octane to keep your engine healthy, such as if you have a motor with high compression or forced induction
if you have an old shitter, you can use very bad petrol in it and it will still go. one time i needed fuel for my econovan, and i was too lazy to drive to the servo (which is like half a block away). i happened to have a tote tray of petrol that i'd been using to clean oily parts with. it had just been sitting on a shelf of my garage, uncovered, for at least 2 months. i grabbed a trusty 2L coke bottle funnel and filled the van up and drove it on that petrol for two weeks till it ran out. it clogged up the fuel filter and the thing wouldn't drive above 80km/h, but it worked. one fuel filter and a fresh tank of proper petrol later, the van is still going strong

fuel most definitly goes off. the stuff in the tank of my supra did while it was busily killing grass in my yard, and as a result wouldn't start. needed to drop the tank, drain and refill.

my celica which i just got, has been sitting since the end of last year, which racks up at about 4 months, the car doesnt have an original fuel cap...
i put 5 litres of fuel in, and it runs...
shitty, but it runs, i want to burn through this shithouse fuel before i do anything with it...
bad thing if your car sounds very loud, and is unregistered, since all you can do is sit the idling/revving/pissingeveryoneoff.
i beleive my car needs a fuel filter, and a new ct, because it was spitting bits out under a bit of throttle. but that stopped now.

Yes, fuel does go 'off'. The shorter chain fractions-or volatiles-evaporate into the atmosphere leaving you with a fuel mix that is difficult to light (comparitively anyway) and has a slower burn rate.
HOWEVER, as it's been in a non-vented can, it'll be fine.
The sort of fuel to be wary of is (for example) premium fuel at a small out-of-the-way servo where it sits in the tank for months before you buy it.......

There is something in unleaded petrol that makes it go to jelly after a long time (1 or 2 years). If this happens to your car, say goodbye to your pump and lines, and you will need to send the injectors and tank off to be cleaned.
Most duel fuel (petrol/lpg) cars that only use LPG end up unable to run on petrol because of this.
One of the reasons why I didn't want to put my car into storage....
