AE86 Rollcage specifications

My cousin has just bought an AE86 and is currently doing a blacktop turbo conversion... anyway to the point.
He asked me this morning if I knew a source to get every single tiny measurement on an AE86 roll-cage and even a blueprint or something of the sort if possible. He has a place next door to the workshop he is working on his car on that manufactures steel frames etc and has done rollcages before, just needs the measurements....
Thanks peeps,
Kev.

As far as I know there really isn't a recipe for a rollcage as such. Choose the design you want (The CAMS manual has a bunch of homologated ones) then bend up the tubing and check it against the shape of the car, then bend the tubing more and re-check, then more bending and checking etc etc etc... Then weld that section in and move onto the next section.
So each cage is custom made to the car. Also, all cars are slightly different shapes and dimensions, so the perfect cage in one car may foul on parts of another car of the exact same model.

The recipe is normally around 1/2" from the roof skin at most, and at max 1" from the pillars for the main hoop. And then similar for the rest. Common to stitch a plate between the A pillars and the cage too.
Thats from my observation.
Go buy the CAMS manual, and look at the homologated cage designs (and hopefully dont destroy that section with coffee like i did to my 03 manual)

Jezza finds himself in a state of agreeance with Mr. Rex Kelway and has also discovered upon further inspection of his own here roll cage that Rex has shown some validity in his point of view.
Another thing that Jezza has indeed put into thinking is that perhaps the person constucting the said rollover protection system must determine his own choice of design, considering all of the above options proposed to him.
Jezza passes on his regards and hopes that this thread may be of assistance to the resultant roll cage......

Rex is right, hence the 1/2" gap which i was advocating. As far as i know it the main reason that a lot of rally cars have the A pillars stitched to the cage is because the stitch plate has a LARGE part to play in keeping the A pillar from buckling if you hit a tree with it. Due to the plate being mostly perpindicular to the pillar the stress is spread out across the plate, and then finally across the cage itself.
It is somewhat different for track use.

ok, we all know the Cams reg's, and these are design for competition vehicles, but bare in mind for normal road useage, you are not allowed to have the side intrusion bars or bars, regardless of padding, within 60mm of any occupant... that is period! also engineering reports will be needed for rego and that car will become registed as a two seater, if he is fine with this, there will be no prob for either the law or engineers that sign off.... Of course, us lucky bastard's that race get away with this, and I'm still wondering why as the car is much safer than the govern. restrictions, but they deem it unsafe... go figure..

Well my 86 went through rego on Tuesday without nary a mention of the cage. The only reference to it was "Has to be a two seater because it has a cage" thats all (i thought the complete lack of rear seat, seatbelts or anything back there would have given that one away).
I am led to believe that one of the reasons they dont like people trundling around on the road with cages is that the damage caused to non caged cars is exponentially larger due to diminshed crumple zones. That and a good cage can make it very hard for SES to cut you out, and actually have a higher head injury rate due to the lack of a helmet (when on the road), and prominence of large metal bars.
