icon5.gif  Putting 4age 20V into RA28 celica? questions Fri, 15 November 2002 05:24 Go to next message
ok. like the title says.. im interested to know how difficult the installation of a 4age 20v (silvertop) would be into my RA28. The engine bay is feckin huge so i doubt there would be problems with the physical dimensions of the engine, but i still have a few concerns.
Namely:
- distributor is at the back of the engine, will this create a problem?
- gearbox. What do i use? T50? something stronger?
- Intake manifold. I know its quad throttle bodies.. will it be difficult to turn the intake backwards? i know its been done before, but is it really difficult?
- anything else which i havent thought of which could pose a problem?

I havent gone out a bought an engine, but i am considering it! but, if i get enough positive information, i may just buy one!

Help me out here please anyone

you'd end up with a nice front/rear split of the car weights

- dizzy cannot be cut into firewall very easily, heater box behind there!

- water system is all at the rear of the engine... require custom housings and remote stuff...

Can I add that the car will be rather slow. You really need more torque than a 20v is going to give to get a RA28 up and moving at a decent rate.

The 20v would be nice in a car that weights under 700KG wet like a clubman, or if you want to drive the thing on the track all the time and never let the engine drop below 5500rpm or so.

an RA28 laden with an 18r-c motor wieghs 1080kg..... compare that to an AE92 corolla which weighs in with a 4a-fe at 1050kg...

u sure that it wont move it quick enough?

I've seen a few 20v AE86's in action, and to me they're slow. I can't imagine a Celica being any better! If you're going to all the trouble of doing an engine conversion, why not use an engine that will actually make the car decently quick?

Dude I don't want to pour cold water on your ideas but I suggest going for a drive in a 20v car that weighs 1050KG or so before you make a decision, preferably "beside" one with a GZE in it. A MR2 with a 20v is not a really significantly faster car than a stocker. The MR2 is about 1050KG, and far from quick.

I really doubt that the 20v is putting out much more than 150hp when new, which is only about 10 hp more than a fresh 18-RG with a hell of a lot less torque. I know the specs say the 20v is making more than this but I find it hard to believe, when comparing cars running it with cars making the same quoted power. I wouldn't like to have a 20v engine in a celica when it has so much available engine bay to house any of the better Toyota engines.
