CHEAP computer Sat, 16 April 2005 07:17 Go to next message
hey, im making a computer for my brother (6 years old! Laughing ), and was wondering how you guys thought these prices looked. it's gotta be pretty cheap (read: under about $600), so its gonna be very basic, like no graphics or sound card (will be onboard). also, we dont need a keyboard, mouse, speakers or monitor, so that cuts it down a bit.

so these are the specs im looking at:
cpu: amd athlon xp or intel celeron/old p4
mb: socket a/478, onboard video/sound, front usb
ram: 512mb, one stick
hdd: 40gb, 7200rpm, at least 3yr warranty might be handy, maybe 80gb, not fussed about cache
cd: probably just have my current 52x cdrom, otherwise, black cdrom
case: BASIC, black, front usb, at least 300w psu
fdd: pfft! Rolling Eyes

anyway, these prices are from aus pc market (http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/, includes delivery except for large, bulky items) and scorpion technology (http://www.scorptec.com.au/, no delivery included):

by my calculations, that adds up to $520.30 to $597.30 from aus pc, and $388.00 to $494.00 from scorptec

so, what do you guys reckon? Very Happy

$600 will get you a kicking system actually, expecially if the monitor and other perpherials arent involved...

id get, 512 MB RAM, 80GB 8MG Cache drive.

and athlon 2500+ Batron, a7n8x mobo, then from there its upto you whatever else you want. all this should set you back maybe $450... so youve got room to breathe, and its a decent system, the a7n8x comes with an nforce 2 sipset, and through an onboard GeForce 4 MX440, shares the RAM...

thats what our other computers made of a way...

im using 728mhz,
256 RAM
80 GB 8MB Cache HDD
4x Burner (even though i dont use it)
and, i dont know why....
Geforce 4 Ti4200 128MB AGP 8x

overkill on the graphics side Razz

however i CAN STILL play half-life 2!

any more questions, shoot me a PM or something
