Over tightened head = this...... Sat, 16 April 2005 08:07 Go to next message
I am in the process of doing some mods to my 7MGTE powered Cressida (bigger cooler, turbo, intake manifold, computer etc.) Before I pulled the car of the road to do these mods it was starting to develop a overheating problem being a 7M the first conclusion I come to was BHG but I checked everything ells out first and nothing fixed the problem..

So while the car is already in bits I thought it would be a good opportunity to check and replace the head-gasket.. While I was pulling of the exaust manifold I noticed a water stain down the side of the block I thought maybe the block had a crack in it and this was causing my overheating problems but wasn't 100% sure because I couldn't see a crack so I continued pulling the head off when I found this!!!!!!!!!!

The headgasket hadn't actually blown which was probably thanks to the o-ringed block but i guess that doesn't matter when there is a crack down the side of your block leaking water out..

I rang up the guy I bought the car of 2 years ago and questioned him on how tight he did up the head bolts and he told me he did some research and did them up to 90ft/lb Shocked Toyota's specs are 60 and most people say to do them to 72 just to be safe but not bloody 90!!!!!!!!! Mad

So if anyone has a 7MGE or GTE block laying around please let me know as I am now on the search for a replacement

Thanks for the link, pitty it is in qld.. Will see what I can find down here first..

The motor has had no mods done to it before pulling it apart and yeh I did notice ALOT of carbon in the bores!!! It was starting to blow a lil smoke on startup but never once it was running so maybe it was burnt oil rather than being to rich.. And I am thinking it is probly the turbo and not the valve stem seals as there was no oil on the tops of the valves or on the pistons when I pulled it apart but there was some oil floating around in the cooler pipes but nothing to excessive..

I am going to clean up the head tomorrow and check it for cracks and any warping fingers crossed!!

Also the idea of hydraulics does make alot more sence because I was trying to figure out how doing up the bolts to much could actually force the block apart...

Well I was quoted $75 to send it down to Melbourne. So it'll be slightly cheaper to get it down to Sydney yeah? Didnt get it coz missus thought I ought to spend the money on something more substantial *grumbles*... her mentality was: if it aint broke, why get another one?
