yea was one i brought a while ago, stripped it down tonight to find that. not sure what needs a freshen up but, i dont think the bores look scored, so im hoping i can just get the head rebuilt and get it back togehter. havent popped the bearing caps yet but.
any way to tell exaclty what the cause of the build up is?

You have one cylinder here that is burning oil.
Suggest full reco of engine if I was you. From ex Toyota mech.

About the only way i know of being able to find that would have been a leak down test.
Besides all that here i was thinking that i give mine a hard time. Rusty spark plugs, carbon buildup around where the cams sit and the pistons. That golden look with the oil thats not a burnt oil look, no ?
I'd go for the full rebuild option

so bottom end rebuild is on the cards you think?
i was hoping to get away with just a reco head. so do i go for a re-bore? what about new pistons? how do i check and determine what needs replacing and what i can re-use?
cheers for the advice so far.
ps. is the light brown colour on the crank/rods normal or indicative of a problem?

I'd say the block has already been bored judging by the pic.
That brownie colour could possibly be from blow-by or just burnt oil but either way i don't think its all that good.
In my opinion i'd give it a full re-build but my advice would be to see an engine rebuilder and find out from him what the go is.

Is there a lip at the top of the bores ?
I'm too fussed on that rust in the cylinder (third one) nor on the carbon build up in the second one either. Are they all like that ?

i checked for a lip and couldent feel much if any. only one has the rusty deposits at the top of the bore, and there is one cylinder that seems to have alot more carbon than the others. Ahh well off to the engine machinist i go! how do i decide what to re-use (rods, pistons?)
