ST185 Clunk

Hey guys,
Recently my ST185 has generated a clunk from the rear. It appears to occur when the clutch engages (or grab or whatever the term is)
Any ideas on what the problem could be?
Regards Nathan

Sometimes these models can suffer from a broken rear differential mount. The clunk only happens occasionally and its infuriating and normally very hard to track down.

could be your rear tail shaft. Mine makes this noise because the slines going into the diff are weak and when rolling away a clunk sound is heard from the rear
Check your splines on your tail shaft they may be worn.

Crawl under the rear of the car and check out the rear rubber mount. More then likely it isn't there anymore.

Just thought I'd dig this post up because I've started noticing something similar. I have a sneaking suspicion it may be a tail shaft bearing.
When I load up or back off I get a clunky kind of thump noise. Just one clunk, and only on load/unload.
Car is an MA61.
Ideas?

I had similar problems like your described. I had thought it was the lash on the diff but with the SA63 was the tailshaft uni joint failing. The MA61 had the clunks in and out of gear but once I got the LSD reinstalled and with the bearings replaced it has no clunk/noise no more... now it clunks into gear but most autos do that. My MA61 clunks into gear but not under load. I presume it's your lash on the diff that may need to be adjusted...
Anyone have any other ideas *to correct me as well *
Cheers.

Does it clunk all the time, or just sometimes?

Hey guys, mine still has a clunk occasionally, but i have taken it to my friends and put it up on the hoist and had a look under the car, nothing loose, no worn diffmounts or anything like that. Everything tight and where it is sposed to be.
How would i check the diff splines?

In my case, the clunking which i hear in my car is the exhaust manifold (custom 3") smacking up against the body.
So if the diff mounts are still in good nick (this is a common) how much play do you have in the diff?
A friend of mine has this problem, the diff is on the way out.

exhaust manifold or tip? cause my mechanic and i felt it could be that, tho i think it was a long shot..and there was no play in the diff, or anything under they car for that matter...guess it could be the exhaust, just have to shove something beside it so it is sitting there rigidly

Sorry i meant the exhaust system, the entire length of pipe.
For me it smacks off the rear chassis just as it passes over the rear axle. Not much room there.

For me it's definitely not exhaust. It's in the drive train. Diff probs ocurred to me, but the noise sounds closer to the front of the car.
All the mounts are in good nick, but if I grab my tail shaft I can wiggle it very slightly. Is this normal? (car in gear with handbrake on)
