Cat Conv Fubarred ?

How can you tell when your cat converter is FUBARred ?
After a five minute drive down the road on a cool night tonight, mine glows orange hot fom the centre of the cat con. and then for another metre down the pipe towards the muffler...
So orange hot I thought some Sunlong guy had fitted some neons to it while I was filling the tank....the garage floor was glowing better than a Paris hotel fire.....
Exhaust has some rank burning toxic metal smell and the engine does not rev out cleanly.
I was running very rich for a few days....does it take much raw fuel in the cat to kill it ?
Final question, for tuning this car to correct A/F ratio's, should I just knock the guts out of this cat and refit it, or spend the dosh to replace it with new one ?
Thanks,
Mitch.

fubar.
not much fuel is needed. the extra fuel burns IN the cat and thats what makes the massive heat. i think they begin to fail around badly 800C, and glowing orange is around 600C?
light off temp is abotu 350-400C so they are meant to run hot..

Fubar.
So, I've made toast, roast lump of platinum and other precious metals....hopefully it won't be so big that I can't knock it out of the exhaust pipe.....
Cheers,
Mitch.
