can any one recomend an engine rebuid manual, preferably focusing on small capacity motors (4age) one that a first time engine builder could follow to achive a good result?

Dude,
Have a look on the Toymods home page.
Their is a link on the left hand side called Tech Docs.
Lots of 4AG stuff in their to download.

Try toyota for their repair manual for 4age/4ac/3ac/3a
publication no.36230e or the 36269e. Has everything a beginner would need.

the factory manual isn't for training - just specs & sequences of procedures, besides expensive.
i think you'd be better off with something from a automotive high/technical/training/trade school course, even something about lawnmower or motorcycles, the the factory stuff.

I just recently bought the factory manual and i don't have alot of mechanical knowledge but it looks very doable to me. It's got pics as well. Only thing is that you need a few SST that most people won't have but there are always ways around that.
